Granite Pegs Adult Night Education ELDER DELBERT L. STAPLEY Center January Zeros In On Over one half of the unemployed people in Utah are under 22 years old. This presents an immense problem. What are the reasons that contribute to the existence of this situation? Drop outs! A good number of these young people have, for one reason or another dropped out of Lack of seniority! high school. The young people who have been fortunate enough to get jobs haven't been employed long enough to gain the necessary seniority, in the event of a cut back, they are the first to go. Lack of training! The majority of young people haven't had any kind of job training. Unfortunately most employers want either trained or experienced workers. Automation! Automation is destroying a great many ofjthe jobs previously held by young and unskilled workers. Once this situation Might have meant a hopeless and desperate future to a vast majority of young people, but not any more. Now there is a group of organizations ready to help remedy these problems. These organizations work together under the name of THE YOUTH OPPORTUNITY 13, 1966 B9 Job Problems simply to help these young people get a break. Their only restriction is one of age, in order "To enlist their aid, a person must be under 22 years old. They also prefer that applicants be at least 16, however, they will not refuse to try to help anyone under the age of 16 if honestly in search of work. The Youth Opportunity Center operates as four cooperating organizations. The Utah Employment Security, The Neighborhood Youth Corp., Youth Job Corp., and the Manpower Development and Training Act, or MDTA. The Utah Employment Security is for job placement and the filing of claims. The Neighborhood Youth Corp. is designed to find young people jobs and keep thpm working in their own vicinity. They work on public roads and facilities, bridges, in public offices and in hospitals as nurses aids, etc. To date the Neighborhood Youth Corp has placed 650 boys and girls. The CENTER. The center is located at 345 South Sixth East. The Youth Opportunity Center, open since April, 1965, is a branch of the Utah Employment Security Bureau. In the short time this branch has been in operation, they have placed over 1200 young people. Actually the Youth Opportunity Center acts under a dual purpose; As the old Utah Employment Security Bureau, it finds jobs for young people and handles their unemployment claims. As the new, it operates under several varied plans, all dethe unsigned to help the drop-ou- t, trained, the underprivileged,, the hand! -- capped, and even those who have been in trouble with the law and have records: They have no race, religious, or social barriers. They are there Job Placement Corp sends young people to camps all over the country to work in jobs set up by the government. In these jobs they are trained for future jobs. The Manpower Development and Training Act or MDTA, trains men who have lost their job through automation to do another job. MDTA pays an allowance to married men on this plan, however, it doesnt pay an allowance to single men. I does pay for books, tuition, and necessary equipment while training, for married and single men alike. One fourth of the MDTA funds are being used on young people 21 The MDTA under. old and plan is res- years ponsible for the Oquirrh project to teach remedial education up to the ninth grade. For the first time since it was introduced in 1960, the table has .been printed in the Federal income tax instructions which were recently mailed to taxpayers, said District Income Tax Director Roland V. Wise. The table is based on a 1960-6- 1 study of consumer spending patterns by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and shows the average amount of state sales tax paid by Utah residents.
