The Sparklmg comedy was a major hit in New York, where it ran for almost four years Its record of more than 1500 performances established it as the ninth most successful comedy in the history of the New York stage. In Salt Lake City, Mary Mary will be directed by Robert Hyde Wilson, who is uniquely qualified to guide the Comedy through' its preparatory stages. in 1961 Mr Wilson received a special grant to be in New York, and he was present a director-observ- er at every step leading to opening night. He sat in qp and reinterviews, auditions, rehearsals, ry-outs writing sessions. By the time Mary Mary opened to, the acclaim of critics and the public, he was as familiar with all aspects of the opus as anyone connected with the production. ' Mr. Wilson's close association with the original production of Mary Mary presented an unexpected As he put it, More or less subconsciously, problem I established so high a professional standard for our local effort, that it was almost impossible to attain. 1 knew the full potential of each of the five roles in the play, and as a result, l spent six months interaspirants before I finally viewing and auditioning 75-reached a decision. Mrs. Kerr, who has been hailed as the world's outstanding woman humorist, put her best efforts in the title role. Mary is a young woman with a biting wit, but to interpret her as a bitter person would destroy the character. At the Pioneer Memorial Theatre, the part will be filled by Madelon Thomas, a prime favorite with local audiences. On Broadway Mary was played by Barbara Bel Geddes, Mary's distracted husband, Bob, will be portrayedby another local favorite, H E D. Redford. This is an exacting role.. ..Bob displays unusual talent in maintaining a successful publishing business, but his inability to cope with Mary's compulsive humor converts him into a hilarious bumbler. Dee Sjoblom will appear as Tiffany, Bobs choice as the woman he will marry as soon as his divorce from Mary becomes final. Miss Sjoblom played one of the leads in the recent Pioneer Memorial Theatre production Take Her, She's Mine." Also cast in Mary Mary are Hal Child, as Dirk Winston, the movie star who falls for Mary, and Chester Dowse as the lawyer who tries to solve Bob's complex tax problems.
