Union journeyed to Uintah for a game with the Utes late in the season. Both teams had suffered through rough region action and the Cougars gained their highlight of the 1985 season when they beat the Utes in Vernal. Painiftlfoeirs dtetfealt RvDft The Vernal Junior High 9th grade boys improved their basketball record to 3 wins and 1 loss when they knocked off the Rough Riders in win over West 43-- 9 A DRIVE into overtime and beat the Union team for their only win of the season. Last year Uintah lost a close game to Carbon in the first round of the Cougar Classic and beat Union in the consolation game by a large margin. lRyglh Coders Vernal increased its lead to nine points in the third quarter at and ended up winning the game by 12 Nawahine led the points at Panthers in the third quarter with seven points on three field goals and one free throw. Mulville added two points and Huber scored one. Once again the top scorer was Nawahine at eight points on three field goals and two free throws. Teo added four points on two free throws and one field goal. Huber scored two points. Nawahine was the top scorer in the ball game with 24 points. The Vernal eager fired in nine field goals and hit 6 out of 12 free throws. Teo pumped in eight points. He struck for three field goals and was 2 for 2 from the foul line. Huber added five points and Mulville scored four. Murphy tossed in two points. Mark Peterson led Roosevelt with eight points on four field goals. Mit 29-2- 0 43-3- chell tossed in six points. He fired in two field goals and hit 2 out of 2 free throws. Russ Otterson, Chet Jenkins and Jimmy Smith added four points. Sather and Kevin Young tossed in two points each. The Vernal Panthers suffered their first loss of the season when they were ambushed by the Wasatch Wasps, 9 in Vernal, Saturday. Nawahine led the Panthers with 13 points. He fired in five field goals and hit 3 out of 8 free throws. Teo pumped in six points. Murphy and Fernandoe Towne scored three. Huber and Mulville added two each. Vernal will battle Altamont on the road, Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. and will host Duchesne, Thursday. Vernal will host West, December 19. the Lady Rough Riders in Vernal Roosevelt, Tuesday, November defeated Altamont, 26. The Panthers have also downed West and lost to Duchesne. Roosevelt went ahead by three points 6 in the first quarter and increased their lead to five points in the second quarter at Jennifer Allen led Vernal in the first quarter with four points on two free throws and one field goal. HAut RucixU The annual Uintah-Unio- n basketball battle will be held Saturday in Vernal at Uintah High School. Uintahs varsity girls will take on Union in their first game of the season at 5 : 30 p.m. and the Uintah boys varsity team will take on Union at 7 : 30 p.m. Uintahs rivalry with Union High School began back in 1953. Roosevelt and Alterra High Schools were merged together to form Union High School. The Cougars won the state basketball title in 1953 and have placed in the top eight in other years. Uintah won the state hoop crown in 1939 and 1967 and has also placed in the top eight many times. battles Many of the Uintah-Unio- n have been close contests and two of the closest ones occured in 1971. Uintah defeated Union both times in overtime in Vernal and Roosevelt. The Cougars also lost two games to Tabiona and split with Duchesne. One or two wins over Uintah could have been the highlight of the Cougars 1971 season. Instead the bright point of the season was overtime losses to the number one Uintah team. Both Uintah and Union suffered through rough times in the first half of their season openers, but the two teams overcame first game jitters and posted victories. Union downed Altamont and Uintah beat Wasatch by ten points. Eight cagers pumped in points for the Uintah Utes in their win over Wasatch. Brett Weldon led the Utes with 22 points. He scored most of his points on inside moves and short jumpers. Valton Mortenson came off the bench and scored 12 points. Union also had eight hoopsters score in their game with Altamont. The Cougars received balanced scoring as Tracy Ross scored 14, Mike Olsen, 12; Eddy Samuels, 12; Brent Jarrett, 11 and Rodney Mezenen, 10. Uintah and Union were able to drive inside on their first game opponents. The Cats and Utes also turned in a few outside shots. Bowling Roosevelt increased its lead to six but Vernal outscored points at the Rough Riders, 13 to 9 in the fourth quarter. Roosevelt won the game by two points, 26-2- 35-3- L. Smuin was the top Vernal scorer at nine points. She fired in four field goals and hit 1 out of 7 free throws. M. Smuin scored eight points. Smuin popped in three field goals and hit 2 out of 6 free throws. Allen scored six points and Swim struck for four. Tidestrad and Johnson added three points. Roosevelt fired in 7 out of 27 free throws. Vernal pocketed a 14-- lead over Altamont in the first quarter and ledi 8 after two quarters. The Panlead at the end of the thers had a third quarter and won the game by the score of M. Smuin led the Vernal Panthers with 16 points. She fifed in seven field goals and hit 2 out of 8 free throws. Tidestrand added 13 points. She fired in six field goals and hit 1 out of 5 free throws. Allen scored ten points.
