Show 1 2 Vernal Express Friday, September 6, 1985 Unemployment continues to decrease in the Basin unemployment Preliminary figures for the Uintah Basin indicate a significant decrease over the revised July totals As a whole the unemployment rate in the Basin decreased by one percentage point dropping from 7 3 in the revised July figure to 6.3 percent in August. Last year in August the unemployment rate in the Basin was relatively unchanged at 6.5 percent. Uintah Countys unemployment rate decreased from 7.1 percent in the revised July figures to 6.0 percent in August. Unemployment in Uintah County was lower in August then it was one year ago. In August 1984 unemployment in the Basin stood at 6 2 percent. In Duchesne County the unemployment rate dropped from the revised figures of 8 1 percent in July to the project 7 0 percent figure in August. A ear ago unemployment in Duchesne County was 7.5 percent. The unemployment rate in Daggett County decreased from 2 4 percent in July to last months figure of 2.2 percent One year ago the unemployment rate in Daggett County was lower than the present rate. In August 1984 unemployment in Daggett County was only 1.7 percent Across the state Sanpete County experienced the highest amount of unemployment at 11.9 percent. Daggett County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state. The state unemployment also experienced a slight decrease dropping from 5 5 percent to 5 3 percent. Last year the state total was only slightly higher at 5.8 percent. The civilian labor forces in Uintah and Daggett counties increased in 1985 but decreased in Duchesne County. Overall the labor force in the Basin increased by 0 6 percent rising to a total of 19.770 In Uintah County the labor force increased by 1 4 percent. The labor Utah crop and weather summary Small grain harvest continued at a good pace and is nearly complete inmost major growing areas, according to the Utah Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Yields have been mostly average except northwestern dryland areas, where yields have been low, due to a dry summer and grasshoppers. Winter wheat, spring wheat, and barley harvests were at least 90 percent complete at the end of the week; and fall seedings of small grains are just beginning. Oat harvest is 75 percent complete about two weeks ahead of normal. Corn and hay crops continue in good shape and running a week to two weeks ahead of normal. Almost of the corn has reached dough stage and 27 percent of third crop alfalfa has been cut. Most of the meadow hay has been harvested except in areas still too wet to cut. Some aphid problems reported in alfalfa in south central areas, but third crop hay is considered in good shape. two-thir- Fruit harvest is in full swing with quality and quantity good, except in northern counties. Warm weather matured peaches rapidly, and producers are hustling to keep up. Cooler weather should help give Utah apples good color. Range feed is adequate although dry on summer ranges. Movement of livestock from the summer ranges has begun. Winter ranges need additional moisture badly. Livestock are in good condition. Duchesne showed a County decrease in the labor force dropping to a total of 6,940. Statewide the labor force now stands at 749,600, a 2.5 percent increase over 1984. Nonagricultural wage and salary jobs increased by 1 8 percent in the Basin in 1985. Daggett County had the increase in percent largest nonagricultural jobs increasing by 7.4 percent for a total of 290. The smallest increase in the in was jobs nonagricultural Duchesne Duchesne County. Countys nonagricultural jobs stands at 4,310 and in Uintah County nonagricultural jobs stand at 9,190. Statewide nonagricultural positions increased by 3.2 percent rising to a total of 625,900 in August. Flaming Gorge centers change to Sept, times Red Canyon Visitor Center has been closed for the season, according to the Ashley National Forest Flaming Gorge Ranger District report. Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor Center is closed on weekdays, but is open on Saturdays and Sundays (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) through September and will be closed for the season after September 29th. tour through Flaming Gorge Dam will remain open daily (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) through September. The self-guide- d Naples City awards contract John Hacking, of Naples, has been awarded the contract for the installation of a sprinkling system in the Naples City Park. Hacking will be responsible for providing the labor and equipment to install a sprinkling system. The system will be included in 14 acres of the park.
