Elsie Twitchell was honored on her 90th birthday with an open house given by friends Friday, August 30. Friends and neighbors visited her from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. The guest book was made by Sharon Olson. The cakes were made by Juanita Ellsworth and decorated by Aleta Ellsworth. LeNita Steinaker made the punch. These women and Weneta Lamb, Cloe Slaugh and Clara Robinson took turns acting as hostess. Elsie received many cards, flowers and telephone calls. Elsie Nelson Twitchell was bom in Beaver Utah to Daniel Nelson and Matilda Warby Nelson August 30, 1895. The Daniel Nelsons moved to Manila in 1896. There are only three people living now that lived in Manila in those days. They are Maudie Green who is in a rest home in Springville, Effie Holfeldt of Salt Lake City and Elsie. The Twitchell family moved to Manila in 1902. December 16, 1914 Elsie married Wallace Twitchell in Green River, Wyoming. They lived in Manila until 1924 when Wallace took a job on road construction at Point of Rocks, Wyoming. When that work was completed they moved through Colorado and settled in Vernal and later in White Rocks where they lived on a farm until Wallaces death in 1959. After her husbands death Elsie moved back to Manila and has lived here every since except for short stays. Wallace and Elsie were parents of 11 children. Esther, Lenard and Gale are deceased. Gale was killed in world War II. None of Elsies children live in Manila at present. Her daughter Enid Shurock lives in Ogden, another Mildred Laplant lives in Oregon, and another daughter Nona Abrams lives in Ohio. Her son Jim lives in Salt Lake, Tony in Washington, Max in Duchesne and another daughter Carol lives in Washington. Carol, Nona, Max and Jim have visited her rcently, but were unable to be with her on her birthday. 4 3 Carrots are economical and nutritious. This recipe makes them a gourmet treat. The enrollment at that time was as follows at the high school which includes junior high school, there were 81 students. The Manila Elementary had 64 and Flaming Gorge Elementary in Dutch John had 38. However, more students were enrolling the day after Labor Day. Some Manila people attended the open house honoring Rowena Anderson on her 90th birthday. The open house was given by her daughters and at the Anderson Ranch near McKinnon, Wyoming. Mrs. Anderson had taught some of these people when Jiey were children. The open house was from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, September 1. Amy Lynn Pallesen, infant daughter of Gary and Terri Pallesen was blessed at the Manila LDS Church Sunday, September 1. She was blessed by her grandfather Grant Maloy who was assisted by the Bishopric. Mr. and Mrs. Leon Jensen and daughters of Montrose, Colorado spent the Labor Day weekend in Manila. Art Robinson and children Tom and Samantha visited Art's parents in Manila Friday. Barbara Potter joined her daughter Mr. and Mrs. Shane and Lazzell of Vernal, for a trip to Scottsdale, Ariz. the last part of last week and the forepart of this week. They visited with Barbaras daughter. Superintendent and Mrs. Vermon Barney spent the Labor Day Holiday in Southern Utah. Manila received .02 of an inch of moisture Sunday. This is the first moisture since August 18 when .02 of an inch fell. That was all the precipitation for the month of August in Manila.
