Lakeside Review, Wednesday March 28, 1984 ,, i ; I T raditions Have Roots In History LYNDIA GRAHAM CHERYL ARCHIBALD Review Correspondent Review Correspondent Tradition used to dictate that a wedding or reception invitation had to be black engraving on nothing but white, placed in two envelopes and mailed. But now, according to Craig Graham, of Sprint Print in Layton, todays young couples are choosing more contemporary invitations, announcements, and wording for both. He said that currently many" couples are choosing a invitation that simply needs to be folded, sealed and addressed before mailing, saving time and money over the more traditional invitation.. Others still prefer to use an invitation with an envelope but often it is only one envelope and the invitation might be white, or in any bf several new, something borrowed, something blue goes the time-honorobservance for new brides. And most wouldnt dare get ed married without wearing an old item along with a new, or without borrowing something - anything - to take down the aisle. And who would risk going into a marriage without a blue garter on her leg? And why? A good guess would be that newlyweds follow traditions out of superstition-t- o bring good luck to the marriage. However, wearing something blue originally had nothing to do with good luck. That tradition came from ancient Israel. Brides wore blue to symbolize fidelity. Why do brides throw the garter after the wedding? Because in early Britain wedding guests broke into the newlyweds bedroom and stole their socks and threw them over their heads to see who would be next to marry. And speaking of throwing things, where did the custom of throwing rice at the bride and groom after the wedding come from? Years ago people threw nuts and grain to ensure many children to work the fields, and to ensure a bountiful harvest. Today, rice is tossed to wish good luck to the bride and groom. Nowdays, wedding bouquets of pretty flowers are carried by the bride and then are thrown to the girls to see who will be the next to be wed, but long ago the bouquets were made of strong herbs to keep evil spirits away. In ancient days the groom had to steal his wife and carry her over the threshold, kicking and screaming, but now the practice is a more romantic welcoming of the bride to her new home. LAYTON Message Of Poem: I Simplicity, Personality Something old, something " j r : Graham said that if there is a complicated route to follow to either the place of the wedding or the reception, a map card should be sent with the invitation or printed on the back of the invitation. This can help all guests to easily find their way and save related problems. If the wedding is to be held in a church a pew card could be sent to special friends and relatives who are to be seated in reserved sections of the church for the ceremony. If the wedding is being held in an LDS temple an enclosure card inviting the guest to the event be included with the reception invitation announcing the place and time of the wed- - tri-fo- ld off-whi- ding. Along with the changes in the actual wedding or reception invitation, has come a change in the wording of the invitations. While it is still perfectly proper to issue the traditionally worded invitation, such as Mr. and Mrs. John Smith request your presence at the marriage of their daughter.. many couples are deciding on a less formal and more personal invitation. Following are some examples; With joyful hearts we ask you to be present at the ceremony uniting our daughter Susan and Mr. James Earl Smith... followed by the date and time, and parents name. Because you have shared in their lives by your friendship and love, you are invited to share with our daughter, Diana Lee and David Henery Jones, when they exchange marriage vows and begin their new life together on..flowed by the time and place details, and signed by the brides, parents. , Our daughter, Janet Mae, and Steven Smith, have chosen to seal their love eternally in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Friday, June 2, 1984, You are invited to share their joy at a te pastel colors. Often, in our area, the couple choose to include a picture of themselves on the inside of the invitation in either black and white or color. These make a keepsake for invited guests and friends. There are a few simple rules of etiquette to be followed in . is- suing invitations, said Graham. They are not complicated and make inviting the guests a little easier and can clear up any confusion that might come up. Invitations are usually issued by the parents of the bride, the surviving parent if one is deceased, or the nearest of kin if both parents are deceased. Graham said that the accepted order of kinship for those issuing the invitations is: elder brother, elder sister, grandparents, or the. one surviving, aunt or uncle, guardian, bride and groom issue the invitation themselves, grooms family. Invitations should be mailed not more than three and not less than two weeks before the wedding date and all should be mailed at one time. Wedding announcements are I reception in their honor on.. followed by date, time and parents names. Should the wedding be called off, a brief note should be sent to each person who received an invitation as soon as possible. It need no be lengthy but should be clear, for example, Mr. and Mrs. John Doe are obliged to recall their invitations to the mar-- , riage of their daughter Susan to Henry Brown, as the marriage . will not take place. Wording could be changed to fit the circumstances. With so many young couples choosing to write their own wording for the invitations and often are including the use of pictures careful thought and planning should be given to this detail of the wedding to allow ample time for the invitations to be printed, addressed, and (Qua. woo jAjloX. ..
