Show 4 Lakeside Review, Wednesday, March 28, 1984 Planning to Do Own Reception? Consider Variety of Alternatives LYNDIA GRAHAM Review Correspondent To cater oi not LAYTON to cater is probably the most asked question in considering reception plans usually coming not too long after the "will you question from the groom. In fact a good many mothers have probably determined the catering answer before the bride receives her proposal. Money is often the determining factor in whether or not to hire a caterer to do all or part of the reception. Hiring a professional to take care of the details is definitely the easiest way to go. It saves time and worry and, since a professional has been through it so many times, the possibility of overlooking something is reduced. Ruth Huffaker of Ruffles and Lace, a Layton-base- d wedding service, said that a catering and decorating service can really be as inexpensive as handling the plans on your own, especially when many items must be rented to decorate at a reception. Time is another key consideration, according to Mrs. Huffak-e- r. A reception hall usually must be decorated the day of the reception and the decorations taken down immediately after. If the wedding takes place in the morning, followed by a wedding breakfast, the family must hurry to set up decorations and tables for a reception as well as prepare food. By the time it comes to greeting guests, the entire group can be exhausted. Then, after a few hours of standing in a reception line and farewell activities for the bride and groom, comes the awesome tasks of packing up all of the gifts and cleaning up and returning the decorations. Just the thought can send the mother of the bride into tears. A caterer can set up for a reception in two and a half hours and clean up in one. The biggest advantage is that a wedding service is complete, Mrs. Huffafer said. It really can save a lot of running around. She said that usually the least expensive way to deal with a catering service is to take advantage of the package deals that most offer. They almost always have a choice of decorations and colors, and come complete with everything except the brides cake and serving aprons. Often items rented individually for decorating will cost more than a catering package, according to Mrs. Huffaker. She said that if economizing is a necessity the best place to do it, and the most popular in our area, is the food served at the reception. She said an average savings of the total catering cost would be about one half if the family did the food. There is a lot of labor in preparing food, she said. That is a big part of what you would be paying for. A large share of people here do their own food. It works especially well if you have a lot of aunts' and sisters to help. Although family help is important, she urged all brides to con- sider the family when it comes to the actual serving time. She recalled a family wedding when she was helping in the kitchen. She and others were unable to visit with family members who had traveled some distance to the reception and had to immediately return to homes. She their now recommends that friends be asked to help in the kitchen, freeing family members to visit and celebrate with the rest of the - out-of-sta- te family.
