The trick, according to Andrea from Layton Iverson, a teen-agwho enjoys making pinatas for her family, is to blindfold the persons hitting at the pinata and to suspend the pinata from a string hanging from a stick. Black construction paper made the eyes and mouth and a green stem completed it. It became the hit of the neighborhood. To make her candy cane pinata, Andrea blew up two long balloons, making sure that they were not blown overly full. She then taped them together with masking tape to form one long tube. She tied a string to the top end of the balloon and ran it down to the center of the other balloon where she securely tied it sb that the balloons formed a cane shape. She then ripped newspaper into 1 inch to strips. She said that tearing worJcs better than cutting for a smooth finish. She dipped the newspaper strips in a paste made from 3 cups flour and 1 cup water and placed them over the balloons in an overlapping, haphazard way until the balloon was covered. She continued to pat and smooth the papers until it was thick. ' Andrea said not to forget to attach a string to the top of the Candy cane, if you plan to hang it, before the paper mache is put on or it will be difficult to attach on later and have it sturdy enough to hold the finished pi-- ; nata full of candy. After the paper mache is completed, let the pinata hang to dry for a day or two until it is thor- suspense and anticipation. Andrea is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Iverson of Layton. She is a ninth grade student at Central Davis Junior High. She first became interested in making a pinata; while in her Spanish class aj Central. Cleve Dibble, the Spanish teacher, had encouraged his students to make pinatas as an extra credit assignment for the Spanish class. Andrea came up with the idea of a candy cane pinata which is especially appropriate for this time of the year. After the idea of pinatas caught on in her family, several have been made for a variety of holidays by Andrea and her mother, Linda.
