Fabric Shop Moves Near Mall Location LAYTON - Once located in the Fort Lane business district of Layton, The Fabric Shop closed its doors at 88 N. Fort Lane for good Saturday and moved to 423 W. 1500 N. across the street from Layton Hills Mall. According to the owner of the Utah chain of The Fabric Shops, Richard C. Fagg, the move came because of the shift of Layton businesses away from the Fort Lane area. Fagg, a Fruit Heights resident, originally intended for the new' store to be in the mall, but was unable to get adequate store having to go through the mall, they like the convenience of this -- location. She said the store has stocked all new merchandise and is pre- paring for the Halloween and Christmas seasons, the two biggest selling dates in the fabric business. Fagg plans to keep The Fabric Shop a Utah chain and hqs no expansion. plans for Id rather stay in Utah, he said. Im not interested in traveling like I used to. I used to check up on stores and travel 3500 miles. Im content with the out-of-sta- te footage. The problem was, we area. couldn't get enough space to dishe play all our merchandise, said. But this location is fine. You dont have to walk all over the mall to find our store if you want a zipper. You can park right by our front door. The new store offers more patterns of fabrics and sewing items in 2,000 square feet of room more than the old store. The Fabric Shop is one of 16 stores from Logan to Orem. Fagg opened his first store called The Fabric Shop in May, d 1975, after leaving the Fashion Fabrics where he He applied his was a fabric business in the experience to making his new stores a success. He currently is the principle and controlling owner of the ' business. In 1978, Fashion Fabrics went out of business and Fagg bought a, few of the stores including one at 5700 S. 2000 W. in Roy. Fagg said over the last nine years, Fashion Fabrics, K Mart, Grand Central, Sears, Great American Fabrics, J.C. Penney and, most recently, Mervyns, have all gone out of the fabric selling business. Few department stores can afford fabric departments because of the high inventory, Fagg said. It takes enormous inventory to stock a store. It has a relatively low profit margin and not as high as other type of goods. Fagg said the less inventory per square foot in the store, the higher the profit margin.
