Show 4B 'Clowning Around ' Comes Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, July 27, 1983 'Grandma' Helps Kids With Ceramics neighbors and friends, along with her own posterity, by sharing expertise in the art of sculpting with youngsters who are wil- By SHARON STEELE Review Corretpondent SUNSET By the time the average woman has acquired a number of great-grandchildre- n, not to mention the grandchildren and children who preceded them, she might want to hang up the various hats that have made her teacher, trainer and caretaker of young people over many years, secure in the knowledge that she has contributed her share to future society. Not so with Lu Fawson, who at 77 continues to foster learning opportunities for children of A - V ling to work. Lu has been featured in art shows throughout the state. She has been a guest lecturer at BYU, and her research in the formulation of authentic Indian clays has been widely recognized in scholarly publications and seminars. This summer, as in many past years, the bright and airy study off the back of the Fawson home at 1456 N. 125 W. in Sunset was one-wom- an the scene of twice weekly classes offering instruction in many aspects of ceramic work to a number of elementary school aged youngsters. As the childrens interest grew, their working area overflowed into an open air workshop improvised under the carport, where they explored both and molded sculpture. Completed pieces were cleaned, glazed and fired. Filmstrips free-for- m gave them vicarious experience in the historical overview of clays and pottery. Area children participating Naturally to included: Jason Tackett, Abraham Fawson, Jared Johnson, Jennifer Steele, Ann Holman, Paul Fawson III and Jeffery Graham. After all, back in 1960 Mike's mother, Sharon, won the first Clown for a Day contest at the Utah State Fair and spent a whole Saturday entertaining fairgoers as a trainee of Timbo v ; Although Lu does not charge young people for the opportunity of working under her supervision, she does demand hard work and a highly motivated attitude from students. Her combination of loving strictness has earned her the affectionate title of Professor Grandma. and Clown. Now, 23 years later, Michael seems to be following in his mothers footsteps big ones, -Old judging from the average size of clown shoes. On July 16, which is his moms birthday, Mike e winner in was named the junior division of the Ogden City Chamber of Commerces first-plac- clown contest, during the Pioneer Days Street Festival. Although Mrs. Steele won her clown title as the result of a writing contest at the age of 12, she says that Mikey, just half that age, was judged on the general inclination. basis of Hes always been a funny kind of kid! she said.
