been going on for three years Finally she is rescued from the sexual victimizing at the hands of her own father and now she is undergoing therapy at a San Diego Child Sexual Abuse clinic Words tumble from her mouth with childish guilelessness She thinks she is a picture of sophistication by sitting up straight in the chair but her legs aren’t long enough to touch the floor Tightly clasped hands expose nails bitten to the quick Her inability to cope is evidenced by dark streaks under the eyes The lines on the young face represent the marks left by nights of staying awake on guard against the possible return to her room by her father for one more ' sexual assault During these times of physical harassment Tami hasn’t the will to repluse parental authority and submits to her father’s demands lying there like a rag doll The most she is ever able to manage are silent screams or whispered words of protest Sometimes if she’s lucky she is able to pretend that what is happening is all a bad dream It is impossible to estimate the actual number of youngsters who like Tami are victims of their own parents and unable to find security and safety even within their own homes Experts are agreed however that cases which finally reach the ears of authorities barely scratch the surface They are hopeful that now that there are laws on the books making it mandatory for the reporting of such incidents that they will be able to reach and help children before their experiences leave permanent scars Today Tami and other victims like her are making their way to various authorities to report what is happening to them For the first time they are finding members of the community who are willing to believe them and to help them Publicity on television and in the newspapers has served as well to make them aware they are not alone and has reinforced their courage Gerald Vernon director of San Diego’s Child Sexual Abuse treatment program said “All professionals are listening to the children more now and listening to them in terms of maybe it really did happen and not that it is just a fabrication on the part of the child to get even with a parent” Sgt Bill Dunn head of San Diego Police Department’s Child Abuse team said “In our early training a lot of professionals experienced men and women didn’t believe this activity was really going on It has been brought to their attention and now they really do believe it There is a defirite analogy between incest and the former attitude toward rape victims” Dunn said reports of molestation average one a day in San Diego In 1979 there were 293 reported cases While authorities agree that it is not incest itself that is on the rise but the actual reporting of it there is general disagreement is to the number of actual cases nationwide Most workers in the field are convinced that reported cases are only a fraction of the whole Vernon a clinical psychologist Vernon said “Nobody knows much about the incidence of incest There is no way of knowing Incest is such a secret thing so hidden by shame and guilt that nobody will ever know However we are aware that the report rate is increasing incredibly In 1976 the Department of Welfare had about 275 cases last year there were well over 2000 cases” Dr David Sears technical information specialist of the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect Washington D C said “It is common knowledge in the field that incest is one of the most underreported types of child abuse We can make a national estimate of 60000 to 70000 cases but we consider this a basement figure Other experts as well feel this report figure is too low” Sears said the number of reported incest cases has almost doubled from 1976 to 1978 Some of the older sufferers still under treatment in San Diego recalled their early experiences “I just shut my eyes and pretended it was a “It would happen dream” said one teen-age- r when I was asleep so I don’t remember now many times it happened I tried to get far away from Daddy I moved closer and closer to my sister I don’t know how she didn’t wake up but she didn’t” A girl recalled “It started when I was 12 He told me he wanted to show me how to do it so that when I grew up I wouldn’t be afraid and would know how to do it I and thought I was going crazy I felt so alonedidn’t didn’t have anyone to talk to about it I think anyone would understand or believe me if I told them about it and I couldn’t tell my mother He told me he would hurt me if I told are able to deanyone” These adolescents scribe their experiences With younger children some therapists use anatomically correct dolls to enable youngsters to reproduce what happened to them Doctors at Children's Hospital in San Diego examined 87 incest victims during the first five months of 1980 In 1979 there were 112 cases for the entire year The ages ranged from six children who were were 2 to up to 3 years old to 11 who were more than 14 years old Eleven were boys and 76 were girls According to psychologist Vernon: “The usual victims range in age from 6 to 16 but we’ve had children victimized as young as a year and a half There have also been cases of intercourse reported with children a few months old” Sometimes surgery is necessary to correct vaginal tearing In the very young incest is frequently discovered by doctors who treat a rash or vaginal irritation or a venereal disease Of the 87 children brought to the hospital 49 were white 21 black three Asian nine Latin and five were of mixed parentage They had been ravaged by fathers stepfathers mothers’ boyfriends and others One of the results of their study — a Child Victimization Study Highlight report — gives a profile of the incest offender He is “most often a natural father an unrelated male or step-fathliving with the victim’s natural mother While many are unemployed the typical suspect is working several are employed in white collar jobs Average suspect age is 32 and victim age 10 or 11 years The molestation is most likely to be reported by a family member other than the victim” Other behavioral scientists add that assailants come from all socioeconomic levels professions and trades and can be heterosexual or bisexual Smith — whose study is funded by the National Center on Child Abuse — said “Up until very recently we have assumed that incest is something that only happens to girls and now that we are making it aceptable to talk about we’re finding out that there are an awful lot of young men who are molested also and I think we’ve just scratched the tip of the iceberg there” There are a variety of incestuous relationships which are known among them cases of father-so- n father-granddaught- is their own f3“ E?
