Board over the 1980 show-dow- recommended expenditures for state buildings The regents are upset because their list of priorities significantly differs from the recommendations the building board submitted to the governor If the building board’s list is approved by the governor and legislature Weber State College would not receive funding for its much needed stores and receiving building and would also lose out on money for other urgent needs on campus But the $17 million shopping list does include $500000 for the first phase of a new business building at WSC During the latest meeting of the board the regents expressed dis- may and indignation over the building board’s of their list “re-prioritiza-tio- n” “This recommendation gives us a very small percentage of our needs” said Associate Commis- sioner Robert Worthington “There is a serious discrepancy if we have 80 percent of the physical plant capacity in the state but only receive 24 percent of the total funding” he added “I am shocked” replied Commissioner of Higher Education TH BeU The regents were totally surprised by the building board’s actions Dr Bell said traditionally the board inserts the regents’ requests into their list in the order the regents list them He said this year it looked like the building board tossed the higher education priorities into the air and then inserted them into their budget Regent Robert L Newey was that the reespecially concerned 1 No priority the stores gents was not included WSC at building at all by the building board “I recommend that the chairman of our board and other interested individuals meet with the building board and the governor so that the governor knows immediately of these problems” said Mr Newey That meeting is forthcoming says the commissioner’s office WSC President Rodney H Brady later said the building board went back on a promise made to the college earlier this year when they failed to include the store’s building in their 1980 budget “The legislature appropriated the funds for the building during their 1979 session When the governor asked for a 4 percent cutback this summer we agreed not to object if they took it off the budget for this year as long as it was put at the top of the 1980 priorities list” said Dr Brady He said the current stores building was not designed for that purpose and urgently needs to be replaced Dr Brady said the college found out they could not store heavy items on the second level after a forklift broke through the floor JW was chosen because the board felt the college had already collected a significant amount of money for its construction “The board elected to give the alcollege $500000 since they had ready collected $15 million in pri- vate donations and possibly sale of another $2 million from the St Benedict’s” he said Mr Woolley said the problem this year was that the regents used repairs requests for alterations and improvements as a “catch- Northern Utah residents The first
