| Show FURR Y NIGHTMARE f 99 HOW GOTHAM ALDERMAN S GRAY PET SMILING TEDDY MUR A FAMILY S SLEEP PICNIC HIGHBALLS TOO STRONG abraham fen chel and his seven ch idren innocent victims of S mian spree D ashes and furn ture broken new york politics and highballs were the undoing of smiling teddy a gray monkey owned by alderman frank datzler which returned at nigh after a two days carouse that began at a picnic of the frank datz ler association at point view grove in the course of Us debauch smil ing teddy nearly frightened to death the family of abraham fenichel of 7 manhattan street and did succeed in breaking much of the fenichel crock ery in a midnight raid he made on the apartment in company with his trainer bos ton george the monkey spends much of his time in the saloon of frank conlon in houston street where the datzler political clansmen foregather red nose henry and others of bis arienda taught smiling teddy to drink highballs and beer and when a treat goes round the monkey Is al ways at the bar clamoring for his when the frank datzler association went by special steamboat to point view grove tor its annual outing the gray monkey went too on that day he had hs fill of highballs and when he returned to the conlon saloon at night he was hilariously intoxicated his keeper forgot to chain him to the ice box and so while his political col leagues were discussing matters of statecraft teddy slipped into a back room and out through a window into the night abraham fenichel and his seven children slept soundly A little after midnight abraham was awakened by some furry thing pulling bis ear grumbling he turned over thinking it was a nightmare but a bite on his neck and the tinkle of a bell aroused him to full consciousness and be sprang up in bed with a shriek that awakened the seven sleepers his children violently he struck about him shouting and praying by turns but the furry thing fad from big bed next there came a scream irom the bed ot etta abraham I 1 s seven ear eld daughter help papa help she cried I 1 am bt teddy had crawled into yetta s bed to escape the tumult but leaped out again when she became violent and losing his bearings perhaps still feel ing the giddiness brought on by his potations ran at random through the small flat the tinkle ot a small bell dishes were being broken attached to his collar enabled the members of the fenichel family now all awake and screaming to follow the movements by this time it was morning and no lights could be turned dishes and furniture were being broken in the frenzied rush about the flat when some of the neighbors came with lights when his trainer tried to get him the fenichel family declared it would hold him hostage until the dam t age he had done was paid tor boston george promising pay ment from alderman datzler finally gained possession of the monkey and carried him back to conlon s saloon where teddy again drank highballs |
