And with the coming of man it seems he invariably leaves traces of civilization in or around the lake. Litter and septic waste problems have Scofield Park Pat Walsh and superintendent Wildlife Resources personnel worried about the long term effects on the lake, Last years fish plant didnt have a good survival rate, Wildlife Resources regional fish manager Walt Donaldson said. Theres no doubt it was due to pollution. Donaldson based his judgment after dropping nets in the middle of the lake. The fish captured in the nets were above average in size, averaging over one pound, but only a few of last years plant were netted. The bigger fish (over two years old) can survive a little pollution, Donaldson said. There are alot of big fish to be caught in the first a ; couple months, but the overall catch rate will be down because our plant didnt make it. Walsh said that the peoples cooperation is the most important thing he can have. There is a strain on manpower and facilities here because of the big demand for recreation here, Walsh said. If the people would wait until they get to shore and throw away their waste things would be a lot better off. Scofield Park, which currently is able to house 40 trailers, already is booked full for Memorial Day weekend and Walsh predicts will be 93 percent full throughout the summer. He said many people will have to be turned away unless they have reservations. A lot of times when we turn people away, they will pitch tents on some of the private land and the landowners complain to us about the mess left behind, Walsh said. Fines of up to $299 can be levied against litter bugs, but Walsh said he would rather see the litterers have to come back to Scofield and pick up trash for a full day. Some people dont learn when they are fined, but if they have to get out and pick up after others they understand a lot better, Walsh said. Scofield Park is being considered for major renovation work in the next couple years. A new boat ramp, which was scheduled for construction this spring, has been put off until fall because it would interupt service. Walsh also is looking forward to a remodeling project which will enlarge the park to house more - AM? 1 &CHq, JjS KHx; : XJrf o 50-fo- ot Ik trailers. Donaldson with the slippery task. Watch the SESCO Window Sign for Weekly OGCGO Both Donaldson and Walsh are excited about the prospects of a good fishing season because of the big fish in the waters. Were glad that the fishing will be so good, but our job is to look down the road and enforce these laws to make sure it will be just as good 10 years from now, Walsh said. Rules which have been in the books for years will be enforced a little more tightly this year because of the big crowds. Scofield vacationers are asked to dump holding or septic tanks at the authorized dump station and to clean fish only at fish stations. Compliance with the park rules can lead to the restoration of the lake, but cleaning the lake up takes longer than it did to damage it.
