Show Friday, January then... 22, 1982 Sun Advocate, Price, Utah obituaries Carl W. "Stubb y " Pe terse n Carl Werner Stubby Petersen, 86, Price, died Jan. 19, 1982 in Castleview Hospital. He was bom Dec. 5, 1895 In Menominee, Mich., to Charles Herman and Georgina Stephensen Petersen. He married Verda Turner March 29. 1918 in Farmington, Utah. She survives. He graduated from East Side High School in Salt Lake City in 1915. He received his degree from Utah State University in 1919 where he was an allconference halfback. Upon graduation, he . coached at Bingham, ,r Ogden and Carbon High School. While in Ogden, ! he played and managed f in team the m So the Ogden Utah Idaho League. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Christ, past member of USU Board of Trustees, USU Alumni Council, Ann Self Training Center, Carbon County Welfare Board, CEU Prehistoric Museum, Old Time Athletes Association and Chamber of Commerce. He was past president of the Price Rotary Club, honorary life member of Joppa Lodge No. 26, F&AM, CF Jennings chapter of Knight Templar, A1 Kalah Shrine Temple, Salt Lake City, Eastern Utah Shrine, Carbon Country Club, Price Elks Lodge No. now... 1550. He was also affiliated with many other civic, education and fraternal organizations and received many other personal awards for his many years of service to the community of Carbon County. In addition to his wife Verda, survivors include one sister, Mrs. Harriette Fog, Hollywood, Calif.; one nephew, Wallace R. Gittings, Hollywood, Calif.; and a community of appreciative friends. A sister, Mrs. V.W. Gittings, preceded him in death. Public Masonic services were to be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Price Elks Lodge. Graveside services were to be conducted by Joppa No. 26, F&AM and officers of the Elks Lodge No. 1550. Burial in Price City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Shriners Crippled Childrens Hospital, Salt Lake City. Surviving a turbulent but colorful history, the Sun Advocate was born the Eastern Utah Telegraph on Jan. 15, 1891 in Price, at that time a village of fewer than 300 in what was then Utahs Emery County. Pictured above is the Eastern Utah Advocate office in 1904. The first edition of the Advocate made its debut Feb. 7, 1895. The newspaper survived six name changes and was sold at sheriffs sales several times. The Sun Advocate drew its first breath Dec. 8, 1932. It was the product of the merger of the Sun and the newspapers in Price. The community had a population of only 6,000 at that time. The newspaper has won many state and regional awards through the years. In 1952, the Sun Advocate was named second place winner in the nation for general excellence in typography. News-Advoca- Price Kiwanis to mark 60th te Dennis R. Deycous Dennis R. Deycous, 38, Price, died Jan. 18, 1982 in Castleview Hospital. He was bom Feb. 10, 1943 in Wenanachee, Wash., to Ray and Mary Rose Wiley Deycous. He married Barbara Anderson Aug. 31, 1963 in Ephrata, Wash. She survives. A graduate of Ephrata High School, he served with the U.S. Navy six years. He graduated from Washington State University in 1972 with a degree in civil engineering. He was employed by Utah Power SAVE Ml 9 on Craftsman Joseph A. Oberster HELPER Joseph A. Oberster, 79, died Jan, 19. at his home here after a long illness. He was bom April 27, 1902 in Aspen, Colo., to Andrew and Jennie Bolden Oberster. He married Frances Piute Dec. 6, 1921 in Gunnison, Colo. She died Dec. 2, 1964. They had one son, Albert Oberster, who preceded him in death. He later married Eda Cunningham June 1, 1970. She survives. A retired coal miner, he was a former employee of Independent Coal & Coke, Castle Gate Mine. He was a retired member of UMWA Castle Gate Local No. 1681, SNPJ Lodge, Cresta Butte, Colo., and the Catholic Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include stepsons and stepdaughters, Mrs. Fred (Pamela) Kirkwood, Helper, Mrs. Patricia Webster, Salt Lake City, Mrs. Helen Robey, Concord, Calif., Mrs. Wanda Mellow and Kenneth Gentry, both of Spring Glen, Mrs. Jack (Marie) Myer, Mjrion, and Raymond Gentry, Scottsdale, Ariz.; 24 grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren. Mass of the Christian burial was to be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Anthonys Catholic Church, Helper. Holy rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Thursday at Mitchell Funeral Home. Guest speaker will be LeRoy Olsen, past governor and international trustee. Duane B. Herbert, lieutenant governor for District 1, will be an honored guest. Jack Houston, anniversary chairman, will make special remarks. Master of ceremonies will be William J. Welsh Jr. Legion of Honor awards will go to Jack Houston, member; R.T. Mitchell, 40 A. years; Joseph Delpha and Luke Pappas, 35 years; Joe Hammond, Walter Axelgard, Kay Bunnell and Dean Murdock, 30 years.
