Show Wednesday, November 5, mother matters easy when you think in terms of cup of milk, or three-fourt- one-ha- lf Mother and columnist This week I went grocery shopping with my daughter Ruth, age 6. This is her week to be Super Chef. We sat down Monday after school and planned out the menus for the week. Not everything came out just as she wanted. I made her add a main dish and some vegetables to the day that she wanted to have pudding plus dessert. I still dont think she was convinced that it was a necessary change, but she went along. Hopefully, planning balanced meals with her now will help teach her good nutrition habits that will stay with her for the rest of her life. Shopping together is another treat. No one else is allowed to go with the chef and mom when we shop for the weeks groceries. Individual time with each child is hard to find in our busy schedule and this is a good time for talking and listening. Ideally, the chef talks and mom listens and no radio chatter or music is allowed in the car. This is also a good time to teach budgeting. I try to review the grocery ads before we sit down to plan so that I can help them save money by buying sale items. As an incentive for the child to shop carefully, I let him keep for himself any money he does not spend over the budgeted amount for the week. There are some rules, however. First of all there must be good, nutritious meals for the family. Eating macaroni and cheese all week is out. And second, one food storage item must be included in the purchase, such as a bag of flour, a sack of sugar, etc. Of course this does not replenish our food storage completely, but it does help. And I hope the children are learning that we must not only buy for today, but plan ahead for the future as well. Large, expensive food storage items such as dry milk I purchase at another time from a separate fund. But the fun of being chef doesnt stop with the shopping trip. Ahead is an entire week when she can have mom to herself as we prepare the meals. There are many skills that can be learned by working in a kitchen. What better way to teach multiplication than to double a recipe for chocolate chip cookies? Fractions are hs cup of shortening. The rule if you spill it you wipe it up is a simple one and teaches that there are to our actions. If watching children make a shambles of your kitchen bothers you to the point that there is conflict instead of congeniality, then be careful how you delegate responsibility for the meals. Usually, just by banning everyone else from the kitchen except the two of you will keep the mess under control. If the child is old enough and wants more independence, I sometimes find that the easiest con-seqenc- es Sun Advocate, Price, Utah5B weddings The super chef By LOIS BARTHOLOMEW 1986 thing for me to do is to simply leave the room. If there are any questions or emergencies, I am available, but I dont have to watch as he does everything backwards. Somehow I dont mind the mess so much if I come back when the deed is done and the cake is in the oven. Then we can clean it up together (he doesnt get out of that) and our relationship is preserved. Rotating job assignments (we it weekly), gives children a variety of experiences around the house. I think I can safely say that being Super Chef is the job that both my boys and girls enjoy the most. ft Sf 7 t' V MS Stacie Dees Kent Colton 4 Mr. and Mrs. Carl F.
