Thats the slogan of the Help Stop Poaching program of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Law enforcement specialist Bruce Johnson says that a person who poaches an animal is never really sure if someone has seen him commit the crime. Johnson, who coordinates the program, adds' Most calls come from people who did not see the illegal take in the field. They are aggravated by hearing of the poaching incident, either from the bragging poacher or from someone the poacher thought would keep the crime confidential, or theyre just concerned neighbors. A case in point. On the opening weekend of the deer hunt, a person illegally killed an elk. He turned himself in, but only after the person who witnessed the shooting called the poaching hotline . (800-662-333- All calls are screened, and not all reports result in an arrest. We appreciate the calls. You never know unless you try, said Johnson. The program promises the callers identiy will be kept anonymous and offers a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a 7 poacher. According to Johnson, most people are not interested in the reward. They simply want to see the violator punished. Poaching is any illegal taking of wildlife, said Johnson. That means many violations in addition to taking an animal out of season or without a license. Misusing transportation rules and hunting success.
