By LOIS BARTHOLOMEW Mother and columnist Tradition, a friend told me, is the glue that holds families together. While we usually think of family traditions in relation to major holidays such as and Christmas, there are many other occasions around which families can build Thanksgiving traditions. One of the best is birthdays. Birthdays are like no other holiday because they are for you. Unless you are a twin or, as happens rarely, share a birthday with another family member or a major holiday, this day is yours alone. It is an ideal time for parents to help a child understand his or her own unique and very important place in the family. It really isnt necessary to have a formal party to have fun on a birthday. Just a supper with balloons, singing, family gifts and the traditional birthday cake can make the day i let the birthday child the menu for the day, and this is one time when personal favorites have priority We choose over moms regular choice of main dish and vegetables. For those who want to have a party, they can be fun for children of any age and many adults enjoy them as well. Karen, a child developement major, gave me a good rule of thumb to use when planning birthday parties for children. Have as many guests as the child is old, she said. A can handle having two little friends over. Someone turning 10 can enjoy 10 friends. This has proved to be very workable for us. The child is not overwhelmed by so many strangers that it no longer is fun for him. Several other mothers I interviewed passed on some of two-year-o- ld their favorite birthday traditions. Kathy puts the birthday child to bed early the night before and births Dr. and Mrs. William of Largo, Florida are to announce the birth of proud their son, John Edward, on Sept. 25 at Morton Plant Hospital. He weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces and was 20 inches long. are His Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso Sausedo of East Carbon. Ver-maz- en great-grandpare- then the rest of the family stays up and decorates the house with balloons, posters and crepe paper streamers. In the morning the birthday boy or girl wakes up to this surprise complete with gaily wrapped gifts. She has them save their presents to open later when grandparents are there. For parties, Kathy covers her dining room tab! with white butcher paper and writes a big Happy Birthday in the and birthday center. Then each little guest is given crayons or markers and allowed to create his or her own placemat greeting. Linda simplifies her party giving by centering them around a specific theme. One year the invitation read Lets Have a Ball. They played different kinds of ball games and the favors and decorations further carried out the theme. Another mother centers each birthday cake with a ceramic figure which has some sort of meaning for that year in the childs life, a soccer player, dancer, or a school boy for the year he started school. These become permanent keepsakes for each child. Some have the birthday child tape a short message giving height, weight, year in school and other such information. Now, with VCR cameras available for rent, these can be used to make a yearly history of the childs growth. Birthday traditions can be as elaborate or as simple as you wish to make them. It is the repetition from year to year that makes them stand out in a childs memory. And that is when they truly become the glue that holds families together.
