Show Wednesday, October 15, 1986 Sun Advocate, Woman judge discusses sex inequality at college (Continued from Page 3A) women who are not sees Eve, mothers and homemakers as unchaste and eternal temptresses. Women who are not innocent and submissive must be the other kind according to this view, she said. This easily leads to a belief in rape cases that the victim was the person actually at fault. Third is the stereotype of woman as superwoman, who can do everything and handle a home, family and career with ease. Superwoman can and will do it all, she said. She will be able to feed her kids, pay the mortgage and put clothes on their backs even though she gets less pay than men.. Women in the legal profession experience a related problem because of the long hours many partners in law firms are required to work, she said. Women are expected to be able work the same long hours without any accommodation as for their responsibilities homemakers and mothers. Some of these stereotypes may prevent women who are victims of domestic abuse, a prevalent problem, from getting the help and support they need, she said. Child abuse is also much more common than most people realize, she said. There are in my court as many as 40 sexual abuse cases each week. She said that male social workers and police officers are not always sensitive to the said. However, joint custody is seldom given and is rarely successful when it is given, she said. Judge McCully said that women lawyers and judges are victims of subtle discrimination when male colleagues and opponents refer to them as lady lawyers and publicly devastating amount of damage caused to young girls by sexual abuse. Sometimes male officials are willing to drop the case if the offender is getting treatment even though it leaves the young girl in the same situation where she is vulnerable to continuing abuse. The feminization of poverty is partly the result of unequal treatment of women by the court system, she said. Usually judges award no more child support than the amount that men can ' comfortably afford to pay, she said. Following a divorce, a far greater percentage of women fall below the poverty line than Students (Continued from Page 1A) about three percent of the students each year as a result of families moving away. We like to be There have been enough students entering school to offset the numbers lost. We are in good shape for building space in the elementary schools, he said. Most of the elementary schools have about 500 students and they could provide for 600 which gives some room for expansion. This is not true of Wellington, however. Wellington was built to hold 600 students and it has 605, he said. If Wellington Elementary continues to grow, a solution will probably be found in changing some boundaries to send some of the children now going to Wellington to other schools. The ratio of students to teachers in the Carbon District is 27 students per teacher in grades from kindergarten to the sixth 25 grade and around 24 or the in students per teacher secondary schools. In 1985 the state average of students to teacher when elementary and secondary were lumped together was 24.1. The average when and secondary are elementary considered together was 19.5 students per teacher. national route. Statehood days will be held here in January 1987 and will be a prelude to the CEU observance, he said. CEU has reached the highest enrollment in its history with about 950 fulltime equivalent students, he said. The head count, which includes those taking only one or two classes, is much higher, he said. There are another 265 full time students on the San Juan campus in Blanding. 39.99 29.99 39.99 60 MONTH 40 MONTH REG. 49.99 WEXCHANGE o MAINTENANCE FREE BATTERIES Our batteries have added protection agains over-charg- e. I think in the future that judges will bend over backward to be fair if fathers express any interest in getting custody, she men. Women are not making it on their own, she said. Another example of inequality is in cases where a woman has foregone a career for the role of homemaker. If her marriage ends, judges usually attach little monetary value to the homemaking skills she has contributed to the marriage. Often the woman will get the home but she also gets the mortgage payments.
