Our proposal is for a Rainbo Oil on the comer property. This is the only issue that is before the city council. This proposal comes after 2 years of public meetings which resulted in a master plan change for our comer. Our proposal has nothing to do with dead carp, dog beatings, transients, increased vandalism, drug dealers, shoplifters fleeing to peoples homes, garbage from dumpsters or the accusation that we are "holding out for the big bucks." Our conditional use permit is based on the Each time I hear someone on TV speaking about a newly discovered site of pollution, I cringe. They tell of places where companies have been out of business for 20, 30, 40 years, but the toxic waste remains and is dangerous to those who now, in all innocence. live and work there The reason I cringe is that there was a smelter here in Murray, run by the U.S. Smelting and Refining Co. and it was there that a goodly number of the areas young men went to work, either to see themselves through college or to work, for the rest of e planning commissions and the planners advice concerning a neighborhood commercial development. We have followed the legal process to the letter of the law without "high priced lawyers at our fingertips." Mrs. Kennedy has questioned, "Who is running our city?" and she feels that it should be the citizens - we agree - but we are citizens of West Valley City too, and anyone who looks around that intersection will realize that we have no choice but to make our corner commercial. The mistakes were made by the county, who made that intersection commercial in the first place, not by the Solomon family, and obviously Mrs. Baker doesnt know much about our attachment to the land which has been our familys since 1890 or about the process of selling and land. Our family has not minded the opposition but. we s and mmors have not appreciated the about our property started by area residents and merchants. Why cant those who are opposed come to us and all of us work together to reach a workable solution? Signs warned people to stay away. And everyone did. The smelter finally closed down and the work transferred to the Magna facility. The place was deserted, and though the smoke stacks still stand out against the sky, the pond has long been filled, covered over and forgotten. But not forgotten by everyone, and I wonder if anyone has ever considered investigating to find out if there is still a pollution problem. The pollution Sharon Steel left at the Midvale Smelter has been located and people are aware of the danger, but no one says a word about Murrays. Is it a case of "out of sight, out of mind???" acid-fille- d Ramona King Scrooge I am writing in regard to recent reports that local elected officials have decided to scrap the light rail UTA is advocating. I think this is a wise choice. The West Valley- - Highway will assist more people in their transportation needs, and areas of the county that have waited years for completion of local roads deserve to be considered first. There is another part of the story concerning UTA that needs to be addressed as well. The contract for bus drivers expires shortly. Everyone who uses UTA should be concerned over this round of contract talks. Management has asked drivers to give up insurance benefits and their guaranteed 40 hour week, among other actions. Personal prescription records of drivers have been searched for substances like valium. Drivers with this type of drug on their list were taken off their buses and given a drug test and then sent out to drive again without the test results compiled. This invasion of privacy was uncalled for, in my opinion. Union leaders try to get information concerning the salary of John Pingree to determine if management was being fair with the workers. They could not get this information. If UTA receives public tax money, which it does, salaries of top officials should be public knowledge. They should have to play by the same rules as school districts who receive public funds. The negotiators tried to get the union to cut insurance benefits. When the union agreed to receive the level of medical insurance that management receives, the discussion ended. Management claims that ridership is down, so drastic measures are needed. I talked to a student at Salt Lake Community College yesterday about her use of the bus. She told me she is constantly late to work because she has no other transportation but the bus. Her boss has been understanding, but if the bus were not there, she would lose her job. The morale of the individual bus driver will determine how many riders heshe has. Your first ambassadors cannot promote more riders if they are being told they will not have a secure salary to finance household expenses, or are worried about having adequate medical coverage for themselves and their families. Isnt it time to give the most consideration to the part of your business that does the real work for you? Is UTA management trying to duplicate Ebenezer Scrooge or "The Grinch That Stole Christmas"? If the skiers who negotiations result in a cant get to the slopes over Christmas will be wondering. The riders who cant get to work will be Individual taxpayers who see the wondering. contract being negotiated just before Christmas will be wondering as well. lock-ou- t, Elaine Jones West Valley gift-givin- U.S. SAVINGS BONDS THE GREAT AMERICAN INVESTMENT |
