There will be a designated area of the cafeteria where employees and guests may smoke - except during lunchwhen the cafeterial will time, 1 1 :30-- 1 :30 remain smoke-free- . Smoking will also be in prohibited private offices. A spokesman for the hospital said allowing smoking in private offices would discriminate against employees who do not have private officers and would put smoke into the ventilation system. The hospital didnt simply take this action on a whim. It is the result of two years of study by administrative and staff committees. The issue has been carefully researched and information from other major hospitals across the country has been considered. Employees have been surveyed and an overwhelming majority support the -- Teachers Frustrated EDITORIAL smoking. This action and that taken by the airlines indicates that major providers are taking seriously the public concern about the harmful effects of smoking and second-han- d smoke. The Green Sheet applauds University Hospitals attitude. We agree that as a leading health care institution in the Intermountain region the hospital has an obligation to protect its patients, employees and visitors from the harmful effects of smoking and to discourage smoking whenever possible. Other health care providers would do well to follow the example. Its a policy public educators have lived with for many years. Perhaps the day is not far off when the goal of a smoke-fre- e workplace can become . never-endin- g year-to-ye- ar s, for all. With the summer vacation season bearing down upon us, its important that you file away this information to assist you in coping. That is in coping with coming back from your vacation. First off, you might want to label that toothbrush. After all, you wont want to use the wrong one,1 even if it does belong to another member of the family. If you stay away two weeks or longer, plan to be disoriented when you return. Among the things you may forget is how to operate the washer and dryer. It will be critical that you relearn that immediately because of the condition of your wardrobe. If you dont take your car on your trip, prepare to be absolutely sure that somethings wrong with the steering because I guarantee you it wont feel right. My only regret is that it didnt make the front page. I am a teacher in the public school system and have felt a great deal of frustration of late with my profession, not because I dont enjoy the children whom I teach, nor because I dont enjoy the actual work that I perform or the duties involved, but rather resulting from the constant and apparently barrage of negative criticism. I have parents calling, all of whom know just what I and all of the other educators in Utah are doing wrong. The governor and his legions in the legislative areas of government characterize us a wastrels, incompetents, uncaring people who are just out for a free ride, with fringe benefits included and part of the year off. Secretary of Education Bennett characterizes the problems he views in education in Utah as arising from the lack of a mandatory recertification and qualification all reflecting on the classroom." T.H. Bell, who is the Benjamin Franklin of Education in Utah, according to many people, recently wrote in an article that Education in Utah will not be reformed until the classroom teachers do a better job. (The implication is that, of course, we are not now doing a good job, and e that is the only problem we currently face in education.) It seems ludicrous to me that with so much "expert" testimony being aired around us, that this is the first article I have seen in quite some time which in any way links the performance of the parents and the student with the outcome of his or her educational experience. Quoting from Mr. Campbells article, "excellence in education cannot be achieved without intellectual and moral integrity coupled with hard work and commitment." I submit that until to the parents and students are truthfulness, stark and bare, of this quotation, to a degree which motivates them to act to improve their performance with relation to the education of the individual, we can do everything the "experts" tell us to do, we can spend unlimited amounts of money in education, and it will avail us nothing. Jenson, was great. He left out a lot of important facts, one being that, in another speech, Lincoln stated unequivocally, "If it were up to me, I would not free a single slave." Also, that Washingtons "personal servants" were all slaves. My second part of this letter regards Michele Bartmess column. Utah is pretty in a few remote places, but a great state it isnt and never will be. Bartmess mentioned about half a dozen good deeds done by past residents of Utah. (Inventing television wasnt one of Philo Farnsworths contributions. Television was invented by Scotsman John Logie Baird in 1925.) Farnsworth worked on television later, but so did thousands of others, most of whom contributed much more than Farnsworth. Since Utah has a small population, nearly all events, crimes, etc., must be assessed on a per capita basis. Therefore, it should be brought to the attention of your readers that Utah also leads in a number of other areas. Utah is first in: unemployment, low wages, underpaid school teachers, incest (highest in the world), police officers arrested for molesting children, raping, dealing in narcotics, etc.. Nearly 50 convictions of police officers last year. Also, number of pounds of narcotics seized, number of murders, number of child murders, divorces, teen pregnancies, teen arrests, plural marriages (a violation of federal and state laws), bank failures, dishonest politicians (the list is almost endless, beginning with Cannon), number of cancer cases, number of common colds, highway deaths, rapes by civilians and bank robbers. Dont pat yourself on the back yet. Nobody cares that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has the radio show. But some people care that the church runs the state. Under church direction, citizens voted to raise their own taxes, to place a tax on food and to vote down the one thing that would lower taxes and increase state revenues - the state lottery. We had been inspired each time we passed the 30x50 foot flag floating majestically against the backdrop of the Mt. Olympus peaks. Since we had taken time to learn that the flag had been a project of the Beckstrand Management people we followed the newspaper account with an inquiry to see if we could determine what had happened. We learned that the police do have some leads according to the report of Kelly Jaynes of that company. Ms. Jaynes stated that the public response to the occurrence has been gratifying in its demonstration of the feeling of pride the people of our valley hold for their flag. They have established a fund to replace the flag and are accepting contributions from anyone who wishes to become involved in the project. These may be sent to Kelly Jaynes, Beckstrand Management, 967 E. 4800 South, Suite 2, Salt Lake City, Utah 84117. It is one of the ironies of reality that one or two destructive human beings can destroy beauty, enjoyment and privileges for so many. One cannot help but feel outrage at the deliberate destruction of any property but there is a special irony when such behavior is centered around the countrys flag that has so long stood as the symbol of the special privilege and freedom of our great land. d Sincerely, Elizabeth S. Sullivan Millcreek Program Is Working Editor: We would like to commend our neighbor, Mrs. Flynn, who spoke out in sheer frustration (May 5) after her new lawnmower was stolen from her yard. We feel many of us could not afford to pay several hundred dollars to continuously replace such items. Like Mrs. Flynn, we are also members of the West Valley Area Law Enforcement Radio Team (ALERT), a division of the Neighborhood Watch Program. We donate our own time and gas to patrol our neighborhood and help be the "eyes and ears" for the West Valley Police Dept. We have proof this program works. On Jan. 29, 1988 one of our units found a child that had been missing for several hours. We have also assisted the police in a few other incidents. We feel the time we donate is well worth it to help keep our neighborhood clean and safe. We need more concerned volunteers from our West Valley neighbors to make this program more effective. If you are interested in smarting or joining the N ei ghborhood AVatch Program andor the ALERT Patrol, please; contact Guy Dodge, Neighborhood Watch Officer or Buzz Blunck, ALERT coordinator at the West Valley Police or visit our booth at Granger Dept., 974-550- 6 Park during Westfest Days, June 24-25. I 4 Councilwoman Owens Congressman Wayne should be because he is committed to representing and serving all of his constituents, not just some. One aspect I find most interesting about our American political system is that our representatives are elected by a majority of the voters and are expected to and, should serve all the people. Thats not too interesting until one considers that often the majority of the voters is actually a minority of the general population. Therefore, an officer holder often represents more people who didnt vote for him than did. A popular and successful Congressman like Mr. Owens understands this well. An example of his commitment to all of his constituents is his drafting of Central Utah Project legislation that would not only deliver water to agricultural and industrial interests but would also provide for environmental enhancement and protection at the same John R.
