Books are big news at West Kearns elementary as students throng to select their veiy own paperbacks from a supply received through the RIF Is (Reading Fundamental) program. "We dont iust give the books said principal away," Jerry Pulsipher. "When we applied for the grant, we said the students would earn the books, and that is just what they have to do." Students in fourth grade were required to read for 400,000 minutes during the term, he explained. Fifth graders had to read at least 120,000 pages, and sixth graders 152,000 pages to qualify for a book. Top reader for the school was sixth grader Marjorie Hogan who read a total of 5,900 pages during the term. Children in lower grades could animal books and books relating to skills and talents. Further shipments are expected in April and again in May, he said.
