The assembly was very patriotic and emotional, as he invited students to come to the front of the crowded auditorium and express their feelings about freedom and what it means to live in America, said Mrs. Burrows. About 20 students took advantage of the offer, she noted, and the assembly then ended with Dr. Sills leading the students and faculty in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were tears in many eyes and a lot of emotion and hugging. It was a neat experience. I admit that I was a little apprehensive when I saw that full auditorium, knowing there would be no song and dance routines, just two speakers. But our students listened and thought and responded. It was a truly great experience, she observed. Also on Thursday the students participated in the Bells Across America project. Students in the vocational TV class had taped 200 seconds of many kinds of bells which were heard throughout the school while a live TV presentation was given to all classrooms and students released red, whire and blue balloons. Freedom from hanFriday, dicaps day, featured a basketball game in which Kearns students played against a paraplegic team. The students were also seated in wheelchairs, which caused them to think twice about handicapped people and their ability to live full lives. They found it very difficult to manipulate the wheelchairs; and to shoot from the waist with no way to jump for leverage, was extremely hard a spokesman remarked. And, the paraplegic team beat them, even thouogh they held back to give the students a fair shot. Students gained a lot of respect and admiration for the handicapped. Other events included flag raising ceremonies by scout troops every day, singing of the national anthem, and handing out stickers. The student body officers are sending a Happy Birthday U. S., Constitution card to President Reagan. The poster-boar- d card, measuring about four by two feet and colored in red, white and blue, was signed by the entire student body. Pictures taken during the weeks activities were included with the card, which was designed and lettered by Jill Keskey, student body historian.
