Brighton w ho built homes in that mountain resort near Sih er Lake. 4 In this Year of the Constitution our search for our yesterdays has been stimulated, for nostalgia is within us. While the Sation speaks of our Founding did, how they did it and I shall stay right in this i alley. Fathers and what they w hy they did it... First there's a Redwood Road, where are the Redwoods??? Jess but where oh IK Fox, who also surveyed theLDS Temple grounds, was asked way back then, to survey a road going south from orlh Temple to 2100 South. So he did, and Fox named it Campus Lane. (Who knows why?) But that didnt stick and it soon became known as Fairbanks (again a big???) but finally, Redwood, which had been a nickname at first, finally became official. And the reason wasis that Fox had used redwood surveyor's pegs to stake the road, and so .. . we have Red w ood Road. ... or a Grange has long meant a farm house farmers association, and so it was Judge Elias Smith, first judge of S.L. County who gave the productive farm lands along Redwood Road the name of Granger, a name we all use today. Jordan River was named L'tah River, but soon the pioneers saw the similarity between L'tah Lake, draining its surplus water via the river, into the salty northern lake, to the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. And so, in the LDS General Conference of Aug. 7th, 1847, they it Western Jordan. The Western was obviously soon dropped. The life of the early pioneers centered (as today) around their LDS wards, and when one ward became too large (same as today) it was divided into others. So, in 1867 li esl Jordan ward w as div ided into many smaller ones and the communities of Bluffdale, Riverton, Herriman, South Jordan, Taylorsville, Granger, Hunter, Pleasant Green and Brighton were formed. And Alta? Well. Alta was a sih er mine high up in Little Cottonwood canyon, and, as many of the miners were Spanish, they used their word for high. 1 Ita, to specify the place. The mines and the miners are long gone, but the name. Alla, is now known throughout the world as a skiing resort.
