Show 10B THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, February Both Are Great, But 26, 1987 Reservations For Parties Now Accepted - Television Calls The Shots For College Sports Talk about the tail wagging the dog. Sports are great. So is television. Thus it would stand to reason that sports and television would make a splendid mix. And, to a certain extent, they do. I dont think theres any substitute for being there in person, but lets face it, most of us wouldnt see very many sporting events. The Super Bowl would just be another game, exciting for those chosen few who had an opportunity to get hold of a ticket. The NCAA finals would be meaningful to the followers of a couple of major colleges. Bowl games would be a great vacation for those who could afford them and the World Series would be seven more baseball games. Again, I'm not knocking television sports. Heaven knows, Ive watched more than my fair share. But when television calls the shots and the good of the game is a distant second place in anyones thoughts, then maybe things have gone too far. d highly-regarde- Or would they? I remember sneaking a radio into class as a youngster shortly after those instruments became portable enough to put in your pocket. Those radio accounts of the Yankees and Dodgers locked up in the World Series were just as exciting as to- days to be instant-replayed-to-deat- h over-analyze- orchestrated events that seem solely for that record in jeopardy by giving in to the lure of television money. For example, after the football season, college basketball becomes an attractive package. On Sunday, all three major networks had a game going on at the same time. One of those games involved a maindependent, the jor, highly-ranked other a team from a conference. The team from the conference had played an important league game Saturday night, hopped a plane and by noon (our time) on Sunday, was playing again. The result was an exciting beginning that deteriorated into a blowout because the players ran out of gas. You can bet why that game was scheduled. It was for television money. The outcome probably didnt really matter, its the personality of the announcer that the networks hedge their bets on. It never ceases to amaze me how many of the Sunday com- batants are (read private church) universities. livelihood of a coach s depends v er much on his record. Another obvious exmaple of how television likes to call the shots involves the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs play their home games at historic Wrigley Field. Team management has conspired over the years to keep baseball there a daytime sport, resisting efforts to have lights installed. ' Its a choice that theyve made and it works for them. But last year the league went so far as to make a ruling that if the Cubs were to advance to play, theyd either have to install lights or theyd have to play their home games in another Nataiona! league park. 12:00 O Entertainment Tonight O Fantasy Island Q Breaking Silence g 0O Nightlife Late O Night with David Letterman CBS Late Movie Beyond MOVIE: Evil CHiPs 12:30 O Waltons 1:00 Check It Outl 1:30 O Wordplay O True Confessions 1:45 O Nightwatch 2:00 Sign Off News CNN News 4:00 0 0 00 0 |
