Show THE GREEN SHEET 9 At Orchard 8, 1987 Thursday, January Pen Pal Project Brings Pleasure To Students by Olga Milius Green Sheet Staff Writer HUNTER. Fifth graders here at Orchard elementary are finding out for themselves that caring and sharing brings happiness. The children were looking for a community service project and voted to become pen pals to residents of the Golden Living Center, explained teacher Lily Eskelsen. The director at the center gave the teacher a list of 34 people who would like to hear from the children and the class decided to write each week. I warned the children they may not hear from their pen pal very There were hugs and kisses and some little gifts for the children. It was a wonderful experience The children, without exception, loved it. They all want to continue their letters throughout the year and are planning another visit in the spring, she said. and gave them cards they had made and small gifts. The impact that visit made was very real, the teacher remarked. When we entered the hall, people were waiting for us. The children heard: Wheres Todd? Which one is Amy? and other eager inquiries. often, explaining that older people sometimes have eye problems or arthritic hands that make it difficult to write. They accepted that and went ahead with their letters, she said. The explanation became real to the children when they paid a visit to their friends, she said. When they met the old people and shook hands, they could see the problems, she noted. One child said, No wonder she doesnt write often, her hands are so sore, she has to wait for her daughter to help her, she noted. The children sang for their friends Older Smokers Who Quit Decrease Health Risks SALT LAKE. Older Utahns who give up smoking decrease their risks of lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, emphasema and coronary heart disease, according to U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. Koop says older smokers who quit, see their risk of heart disease drop, within one to five years, to the level of people who have never smoked. The good news for older smokers comes from a study of smokers, nonsmokers and aged 65 to 74, by the Yale School of Medicine. The study found that exsmokers chances of dying from coronary heart disease were 75 percent lower than the chances for smokers within one to five years after quitting and concluded that people 65 and older who have been smoking for several decades can still benefit from quitting Kicking the habit may not be easy for older people because they have smoked for many years, but more than 30 million Americans have done it Quitting smoking can extend and improve the quality of your life. It's the best news you can give your loved ones, he said. esophagus, four-wee- -- ma cooked from scratch most of the preservatives used today.
