The new three-poin- t basket played a big part in Murrays overcoming a 15 point first quarter deficit and coming back to beat favored Taylorsville here Friday afternoon. The win evened Murrays preseason record at 4 and 4 and the Spartans open Region play tomorrow i Friday at Tooele and will then host Jordan next Tuesday at 7:30. Taylorsville will host Cottonwood Friday and Olympus on Tuesday. at one point in Murray down the first quarter, rallied to at the end of the quarter and were down by only one at the half The Spartans took the lead by two at the end of the third and were ahead by eight during the fourth quarter and held on to win by the final margin. Rebounding from a stunning upset at Murray Friday, Taylorsvilles basketball team entered league play Tuesday night with a drubbing of Granger at Granger. The Warriors would like to make it two in a row in Region Three action when they host Cottonwood, another of the league challengers at 7:30 p.m. On the following Tuesday, Taylorsville will welcome an improving Olympus squad The Lancers, who wracked up back on Dec. 30 (see Murray Murray Story), will be trying to put the wheels back on as they travel to Skyline Friday then host Region Three's surprise team, once beaten Granite. Both of those games will also be at 7:30 p.m. The key to the Tuesday's contest, according to both Taylorsville coach Dan Leatherwood and his Granger counterpart Ed Gray, was the third WEST 68-6- 5 70-4- 5 80-6- 5 the where quarter Warriors outscored the Lancers, incredibly, 19-Taylorsville, which had led just at the half, was now in front 32-2- 5 51-2- Granger took 11 shots from the field in the third period, three and eight but none them fell through. Taylorsville's Jason Knight led his team in scoring with 19 points and added five rebounds. Dough Harmon followed with 13 points and five more boards, while Todd Hailstone picked up 12 points and four rebounds, Jay Gleason 10 points and Chad Christensen nine points and four assists. However, as important as the indidividual scoring was the play of guard Lindsay Familar, who gained a season high 15 assists plus six steals. Taylorsville also turned the ball over just three times and had a solid rebounding edge, as the Lancers were without the services of junior postman Jeff Hudson, their leading rebounder. Top scorers for Granger were Paul Marsh and Travis Langpap with 10 points each. Steve Embley chipped in nine and John Thorpe seven. Granger was 9x17 from the free throw line compared to just 2x4 for Taylorsville, but the Warriors had 33 field goals to only 14 for the Lancers. 6-- 6 - KEARNS. Paced by outstanding individual performances and solid depth throughout, the Cottonwood Heights Aquatic team took top honors at the 21st annual Kearns Holiday Open Swim Meet held Dec. 29, 30 and 31 at the Kearns Recreation Center pool. Cottonwood Heights more than doubled the point total of the runner-uWest Valiev Orcas 525.5 to 225. The Salt Lake Tsunami team came in third with 178.5. Counting Mondays Mini-Mefor youngsters eight years and younger, over 230 swimmers took part in the meet, representing teams from Oregon, Colorado and Wyoming plus contingents from Hill Air Force Base, Price and the University of Utah together with locally based programs. p 85-5- 9 defeated Woods Kearns lost to on Dec. 30. Granite will host Cyprus tomorrow (Friday) and will then play at Granger next Tuesday. Kearns will travel to Olympus Friday and will then play Cyprus at Cyprus next Tuesday. All games will be at 7:30 p.m. According to Kearns Coach Kenyon Clark, Tuesdays loss was a tough one to swallow as his team made only 20 of 55 from the field for a 36 percent shooting night. Despite that the Cougars still had a chance to win and were actually ahead by one with less than 2 minutes to play in the game. But a big rebound by Gary Trost of Granite put the visiting Farmers ahead. Kearns fouled in the last minute and Granite twice missed the front end of but Kearns could not take advantage. Granite outboarded Kearns by 30 to 29 and there were only two three-poin- t baskets during the game, both by Granites John Moses. Coach Charley Whitings Farmers were led by Eric Richards with 17 with Trost adding 16 and Kelly Peterson 12. Kearns was led by Jerry Gibson's 20. Todd Bills had 15 and Peterson 10. Peter Young had 18, Randy Gehl 13, Doug Chapman and Danny Deven-por- t both eight and Cheyenne Winget added six in the Spartans well rounded attack. For the Warriors, Doug Harmon had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jason Knight made 6 of 10 from the field and one of two from three-poin- t range. Lindsay Familar contributed eight points, had three assists and 4 steals, and Todd Hailstone scored seven points and tied Harmon with 12 rebounds. Farmers pulling Trophy Among the other teams the Red Devils from Evanston, Wyoming were fourth with 133 points: Murray fifth with 103; Skyline sixth 89; Firewater, out of the Sandy area, seventh 80; Grand Junction Dolphins ninth 52; Pirates Swim Team tenth 32; Castle Valley eleventh 27; and host Kearns Youth Acquatic Team twelth 18. According to meet director Kathy Horne, the holiday moritorium was lifted for a number of high school swimmers so they were able to compete with their age group squads. The massive Kearns meet took as many months to plan and prepare as it took days to stage it. Well over 100 events were staged on Tuesday and Wednesday alone.
