Show THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, December 11, 1986 Oh Yes, It Would Be Obscene, Indeed I'm mad too, Glade. The Utah Opera Companys Glade Peterson had the best reaction to the worst idea county officials have hatched in recent years. The plan to close the Capitol Theatre is, he stated, obscene. Make that obscene to the max. Like Peterson, my very livelihood is threatened by the proposal. But even if it werent, as a taxpayer I resent the plan and its implications. I resent the commissioners comment that the fine arts subsidy is competing with mental health and prisons for its existence. (Or is it his new leather chair? ) what about you and me? Do we have any rights? We dont cause anyone any problems. Are there any rewards in store for us? comparable facility is Pioneeer Memorial Theatre and one quality theater in a region is not enough. The Capitol Theatre should not be dark. Michele Bartmess In reality, the lights should be turned on - not just occasionally, but every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday of every single week. And not just the inside lights for rehearsals. There should be 52 weeks of performances. At least half of them designed for families, priced at rates that families can afford to pay. People who pay taxes in this county and people who visit our capital city. Music, dance and theater of all kinds should be available. And to an even greater degree I resent the official who suggested the arts organizations could simply raise their ticket prices and let those rich folks pay for it. The theater should not be dark for rehearsals. Arts groups must live with the reality that adequate rehearsal space must be leased elsewhere and the theater itself must be available for performances. The arts in this community are not merely for the wealthy. They coulu not survive if they were. We, the wealthy and the not so wealthy, would no doubt survive without the arts, but our quality of life would be far less than what it is today. Far less than what we as taxpayers deserve. Yes mental health programs and jails are important. But The Capitol Theatre is a very important part of our cultural heritage. It is a wonderful facility for the performers and for the audience. Symphony Hall will not replace it. Its not designed for theater. The only Then and only then are our subsidies worthwhile. Performing is not merely an ego trip. For many it is their sole livelihood. They are trained. They have worked many years to reach this pinnacle. Opportunities to perform for musicians, actors and dancers have already been lessened by the closure of Promised Valley Pioneer Playhouse. Memorial Theatre employs as many out of town performers as it does Salt Lake artists. If the opera, ballet, City Rep and others go down too, many, many lives will be affected. Obviously mine. And perhaps not so obviously, yours. No television show, movie or ball game can have the impact on our lives that live performances do. Lets stand up and be counted tomorrow when the decision to close could be set in concrete by the County Commission. Lets not stand idly by and let them do something so obscene as close that wonderful facility on which they will continue to pay a healthy mortgage for many, many years. - Perhaps this threat to close is aimed at achieving that. The rumors run Teacher to Parent rampant within the arts community. Many, many jobs are threatened -those who appear on stage and those you never see. Our jobs are important to us. Helping your child succeed Betty Condie X) President,byUtah Education 'The hope of every parent is to have children who are responsible, concerned members of society. Discipline is part of this effort. Research has repeatedly shown Association Listening to your children, hugging them, smiling or talking to them are all rewards, the kind that you can give hundreds of times every day. One of the most powerful rewards for children is the love, interest and attention they receive from their mother and father. Let your children know exactly what you expect of them - set limits. Too much freedom is frightening to a child. Set limits for the actions that your children are not ready to control themselves. Children need to know exactly what parents expect of them and also how parents will react to their behavior. Its important to state your requests clearly. For example, its much easier for the child to follow the direction, Please put your glass in the center of the table than it is Be careful with your to follow, milk. Make your requests politely. You know how much more likely you are to respond when someone says, Please. Next week Ill tell you about some more positive discipline methods that work. that, despite the importance of the peer gorup, parents usually have much more influence than they realize. The next few Teacher to Parent columns will discuss discipline that works. Disciplining children takes a great deal of effort, but the main idea is that children and parents can change. Some parents simply do not have the time, energy, or patience to attempt to motivate change in the child or even in themselves. It is not easy, but it can be done. Here are some suggestions for positive steps toward better discipline in your home. Let your children know you like them. Tell them how much you admire their good qualities. Reward them once in a while. These rewards may take the form of extra time reading to your child, time spent in an activity chosen by your child, or even something as simple as a hug.
