Show 4 Thursday, December THE GREEN SHEET 11, 1986 As We See It Eastwood's Leathernecks Are Earthy, Entertaining by Mark Cartwright & Kelli Lidell Green Sheet Entertainment Critics SEEN ON THE SCREEN DEPT.: The Marines are looking for a few good men and until they can find them, at least they have Clint Eastwood as gunnery sergeant and Congressional Medal of Honor winner Ton Highway in Warner Bros, latest release Heartbreak Ridge, playing at Century 5 and Mann Theatres. Highway has enough time in to retire and with his combat experience, which includes Korea, the Dominican Republic and several tours of Vietnam hes reassigned to his old unit and given the job of training the new men (a slovenly bunch) into a combat-read- y squad capable of invading Granada. Of course, while the squad (lets hope that they arent the few good men the corps is looking for) is used to having it easy Sgt. Highways in troduction should leave them without doubt that he not only takes his job seriously, hes a lot harder than their past When top-kic- Highway goes into the recreation room to talk to the men, he turns off a ghettoblaster which one of the men immediately turns back on, leaving Highway no alternative but to heave it across the room, smashing it into a dozen quiet pieces. Producerdirector Eastwood knows what the audience wants and delivers it constandly throughout Heartbreak Ridge. Hes even given well played by Highway an Marsha Mason, whom Highway would like to get back together with, but shes had her fill of men in uniform and wouldnt consider it until he reitires Highways company commander considers him a relic of the past and not in line with the new Marine Corps. Conflict, combat, emotional depth, humor, action and Clint Eastwoods e, realistic direction make Heartbreak Ridge a real winner and our pick of the week for a great way to spend your money. It isnt just another war tale or a story of one stylish, tough winning the whole shooting match by himeself. Its gutsy, earthy and truly entertaining. guy HOLLYWOOD HUBBUB DEPT.: According to Variety, the showbiz bible, after all the doomsaying about how poor the box office was doing for the year 1986, it seems that theres been a change of feeling and now the predictions are that 1986 could finish ahead of last year and its all due to Crocodile Dundee. Seems that the Australian hero is responsible for $1 out of every $6 taken in at the box office this fall and thats some feat. Following his brilliant direction of The Color of Money, director Martin Scoresese has signed a nonexclusive deal with Walt Disney Pictures to produce films. The option to direct is his if he wants to. Joan Rivers is scheduled to go before the cameras at Warner Bors. his time trying to break most of them on televisions The Colbys. Staying on Top in February. The Agency for Performing Arts is suing the Rev. Jesse Jackson for breach of contract. It makes us GOOD NEWSBAD NEW DEPT. : The good news is that Columbia with wonder if they were to set up speaking engagements for him or was he going to record the son The Rainbow Connection under the title The Rainbow Coalition. Last week we were wondering who would dare play Frank Sinatra if Kitty Kelleys book His Way: The Unauthorized Biography of Frank were ever to become a Sinatra, film. Well, how about Sean Penn? He doesnt care who he hits either. And Charlton (Moses) Heston has come out against the colorization process which adds color to- black and white films. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Andrew Lloyd Webbers popular musical based on a biblical story, will be performed in an intimate theatre setting which will initiate an additional dimension for Salt Lake Repertory Theatre. City Rep plans to continue its major productions at Symphony Hall and the Capitol Theatre, but will also be producing theatre in a space in the ZMCI Centers Centennial Avenue located on the top level of the downtown mall, opening the initial show on Wednesday. The space is not really large e enough to be considered for our goal of establishing the Francis Urry Theatre, but this will give us an opportunity to test the concept and our relationship with the ZCMI Center could easily become permanent, noted Thomas W. Parker, president of City Rep. The theater on Centennial Avenue will seat about 120 patrons, Parker said. Zions Securities Corporation, owner of the ZCMI Center, has long been an active supporter of the arts, commented marketing director Shermin Payne. The owners and management of the ZCMI Center are very pleased to welcome Ctiy Rep as a tenant to our mall. This new dimension of entertainment adds a needed balance to our restaurants and shopping and will bring increased interest and excitement to the center, he added. long-rang- Joseph and the Amazing Tehnicolor Dreamcoat is a soft rock theatre. The production is scheduled to run through Saturday, Jan. 17, with performances during the Christmas 532-600- holiday season. Marilyn Mon- tgomery is directing. Shopping malls, Parker commented, have become a center for social life as well as shopping. Whereas most major malls have movie theaters, there are none in the ZCMI Center, and the addition of live theater provides a new, exciting aspect there. Parker said the future for the small theatre could include after-schochildrens productions, lunch-tim- e revues and other small hit musicals similar to those that were performed at the Little Bowery and Plum Alley at Promised Valley Palyhouse. In addition to Joseph, City Rep will be presenting Sleigh Bells in the Sky at the Hansen Planetarium Mondays, Wednesdays, Friday and Saturdays in December, a joint effort of both organizations, David C. Fonnesbeck said bringing the Olympics to Salt Lake City could be done without environmentally damaging the canyons. And regardless of the Olympics, she said, Salt Lake City needs to start planning if it wants to be center for recreational sports. Levitt said the original plans to bring the Olympics here werent thought out well. If we want the games, we need to bring them in in a welcoming manner and not be thinking about how much money we can bring in, he said. Fonnesbeck said the city has time to start preparing to bring the Winter Olympics here in 1998. Finally, Levitt told the assembly the current challenges facing local governments are not worse or better than those of the past. Weve been remarkably successful, he said. Weve been able to cut costs and weve consolidated some of our services. Sometimes it has worked and sometimes it hasnt, but we need to have faith that we will eventually work out our problems. Levitt said we should be a model community. And in some w5ys we are, he added, but we must get out d of being a government Most of us try to avoid that, but soem times we dont. Set. We have learned so much since we lost the bid, said Fonnesbeck who has travled to Switzerland and Calgary, Canada to see what impact the Olympic games have had on those communities. In Calgary we were able to see what happens when you win the bid, she said. Its a beautiful and modern city and would be a model for Salt Lake 10 years from now if we are able to host the games. Fonnesbeck said she believes Salt Lake City would be a better site for the Olympics than Calgary because it has most of the facilities already in place, such as housing and an international airport. If having the Olympics in Salt Lake is something we really want to do, we could probably do it, she said. We have built up credibility with the United States Olympic Committee and I believe with some planning we could get the bid.
