Show IB Thursday, December THE GREEN SHEET 4, 1986 lifestyle Talented Gordon Jump Sheds Image Of Likeable Mr. Carlson by Ralph H. Goff Green Sheet Theater Critic SALT LAKE. I would hope that as we get to his better side, a little bit of Carlson may show up, Gordon Jump commented. The popular television personalitys comment concerned his role as the tightwad, penny-pinchin- g Ebenezer Scrooge in the Promised Valley Playhouse musical production based on the Charles Dickens character. Scrooge opens tomorrow (Friday) on the PVP Mainstage and will continue there for a run through Dec. 20. Jump, who starred as Mr. Carlson the WKRP In Cincinnati TV series, stopped in Salt Lake for a layover last month enroute from Los Angeles (where he appeared in televisions Growing Pains) to Denver (where he would be taping a scene for an upcoming made-for-Tepisode of Perry Mason.) He took some time, however, to spend a few moments discussing himself, his views and his role in the PVP musical. I came near to being typecast in in six-ho- ... If there had been one or two more seasons, there would be no turning back. Carlson would have been a character Id be stuck with for the rest of my life. When the series ended, however, it provided me with a great opportunity to prove to people I can do a lot of other things. I appreciate the opportunity to get out and do some acting in more serious roles - and Calif., where he got his start in show business by acting in San Juan Outpost at the Glendale Centre Theatre. He played a cattle rustler who tried to con a group of Mormon pioneer settlers near St. George. In addition to his starring role in Promised Valleys Scrooge, he currently is doing guest spots as Alan in the Thickes Irish father-in-laGrowing Pains comedy series,, as well as other television, film and live stage productions, he noted. Jump said he had hoped for more rehearsal time here for his Scrooge role, but he also had a dinner theater commitment in Decatur, 111. prior to his return to prepare for his Salt Lake run. It really is a professional show and its being done for a very worthy cause, he pointed out. Part of the ticket price is a donation to the Foundation for terminally ill children, Jump explained. Because of their work, many of these children will have a last wish carried out for them. In a sense, it sort of brings Tiny Tim to reality. The show itself, he said, should be a lot of fun to do. The neat thing about the production is its family orientation. He expressed some concern, though, about his singing ability. Ive always wanted to do Scrooge will be a whole new adventure for me - but Im not a singer, he confessed. If push comes to shove, though, he said he may take a Rex Harrison approach to his vocalizing. The production itself, though is good, clean fun. It has good music and a familiar story, and thats what makes it so delightful. It should be a holiday treat for the whole family. Scrooge will also be a reunion of sorts for Jump and local actor Michael Flynn, who will play the ghost of his late business partner Jacob Marley in the production. Jump explained that he and Flynn performed together in another production a few years back. Besides this reunion, though. Jump said he enjoys visiting the Salt Lake area for several other reasons. There are a lot of good people here and I always feel at home when Im in Salt Lake. It reminds me a lot of my home town, he noted. Jump was born in Centerville, Ohio, a small farming community near Dayton of about 3,000, including dogs, cats and chickens, he explained. We had 16 kids in my graduating class in 1951, he noted. Last year they graduated almost 1,000. Currently he resides in Glendale, operated by Ruth and Nathan Hale who now run the Hale Center Theater in South Salt Lake. Mrs. Hale grew up in Granger, and after operating the theater many years, decided to return to Utah to retire, he noted. Ruth and Nate Hale are really fun people to know, he said, but they had no business retiring from the business. Im really glad they decided to do a comeback (by opening HCT here). They have too much to give the world. Ruth has one of the -- its fun. Make-A-Wis- most talented, gifted minds in the business Jump said that when he first learned the Hales would be producing Dickens A Christmas Carol for the holiday season, I was a little apprehensive playing against them. After mulling the invitation to play Scrooge for Promised Valley production for several days, however, he decided to go ahead with the project. The two shows are really totally different. There is very little that is common between them, he noted. People ought to see them both for themselves. If I get a chance between performances, I know Ill be there - Ruth and Nate are like family to me. And it is family, Jump noted, which brings him to Utah on occasion. His daughter, he explained, attends Brigham Young University and occasionally I even pick up a Continued on page 11 head-to-hea- Jump was one of a number of prominent actors entered show business through performing at the Glendale theater, he noted, including Mike Farrell of TVs MASHsenes.
