Although Post Falls, Idaho doesnt have the same catchy name, it was a similar town. A small town nestled in one of the most beautiful regions of the USA. Unfortunately that beauty is being marred by a series of events that are almost too terrible to comprehend. Post Falls, you see, is just a few miles from Hayden Lake, which borders Coeur d Alene. If you want people to have heard of your home town, you say youre from Coeur d Alene. Both of those communities have been in the news lately. realize what was happening, it was on the brink of a world war that still affects mankind today. This nation, despite the gains of the sixties, still has a ways to go in the area of civil rights. It is unthinkable that those people in northern Idaho could gain a stronghold sufficientto be a threat, but I personally consider them too dangerous to simply ignore. No doubt my memories of the area they have chosen as their base of operations have been dimmed by time. Probably it has changed in the two decades since I lived there. It is (was) kind of a quiet area. Its not typical of what most people think of as Idaho. The Mormon population is far less than the rest of the state. Until the recession hit the nation, the major industry was lumber. peo- When these things are going on about you, you have to make choices. Do you ignore it and hope that it will go away? Four bombs went off in Coeur d Alene last week. Which is no doubt why these evil people selected it. But I have faith in the people of northern Idaho. They are not going to embrace this philosophy. Its more likely that they will fight it, as risky and uncomfortable as it will be. Me, coward that I am, Im glad I no longer live in my home town. But many of us, when we talk -and children are the audience -dont stop to distinquish between with and to. Lets suppose that 8 year-olDavid is having trouble reading. He seem to be falling farther and farther behind at school. You have d helped always him with his homework. Youve always gone to parent-teache- r conference. Youve read to him and had books in the house for him ever since he was small. Now you say to yourself, Where did I go wrong? You dont say this aloud, of course, because you dont want to make things worse for David by letting him know that you have something for which to blame yourself. Instead, you try to talk to David about how important it is to read both in school and out. You may even tell him how reading will improve his chances of becoming a happy adult, a doctor or lawyer, or of doing something famous, like writing a bestseller. From your point of view as an adult, that makes good sense. Your experience makes it possible for you to be wise about the skills that make adult life better and easier. But have you ever talked with David about his reading right now? Have you listened to him talk about it and thought what his words meant? Maybe he says that reading a book isnt as much fun as playing with his friend Tracy, or as interesting as watching the TV programs you allow him to see, or as exciting as working math problems. Maybe the trouble he has had on last page. figur-Continu- - a healthy by Ralph H. Goff Green Sheet Theater Critic SOUTH SALT LAKE.
