The long wa it ended for one of Region Threes winless teams Friday, as Co- SALT LAKE. Preseason football was tough enough, and nobody promised it would get any easier as Region Six play rolled around. It didnt for the Murray Spartans who dropped the region opener to Judge ttonwood runningback Bobby Mathewson posted four touchdowns, kickoff including one on a return, to lead his team to a home victory over Granite. Cottonwood ended up with 336 yards rushing, including 144 by Mathewson on 14 carries, but only 49 yards passing, a stat Colt coach Tom Jones would definitely like to see improved upon during tomorrows Friday) 7:30 p.m. game at Skyline. Though Granites offense definitely perked up in posting 21 points, injuries continue to cut into the Farmers depth and turnovers remained a problem. Granite hosts Cyprus tomorrow night at 7:30. We continue to get good production from our running backs, coach Jones said of his teams performance against Granite. Our line is opening up some holes in the defense and the backs are finding them. If we could get everybody healthy all at once," commented Farmer coach Mark Nielson, its hard to say what we could do. Mathewson didnt waste any time getting his first touchdown on the run board, scoring on a four-yarearly in the first period. He set up the play with a scamper. Blaine Burnett then kicked the first of seven extra points. Still in the first period, Mathewson was off to the races again, scoring run. this time on a Granite countered early in the second quarter, as Jimmy Young, Continued on page 4. 49-2- 1 Memorial, Both coaches, Murray's Dale Pehrson and Judges John Colosimo, felt the score wasnt a true barometer of the game, but Judge takes the league win to the bank. Murray scored first and last with the Bulldogs doing all their damage in between. Both teams know the importance of the win, but neither sits on its laurels or sulks in the suds while preparing to square off against different Region Six teams this weekend. Murray is at home tomorrow (Friday), meeting South ) at 4 p.m., while the Bulldogs must face Wests Panthers on their home turf. West sneaked past Tooele last 0 week and have homecoming stars in their eyes. They are another big team to face. They are physical and will be a test for our offense, said Judge Coach Colosimo. We must have effective pass blocking because they do stunt a lot. Another interesting matchup will come from highly-toute- d Bulldog Cameron Kersey, who faces his Gary Perkins, Wests 28-1- ( (2-2- 12-1- d half-broth- quarterback. Cottonwood's Cedric Whetten (19) stretches out to break up pass intended for Granite's Mark Casper (32) during second quarter of game Friday afternoon. BROKEN UP . . . Kearns Battles Back To Overcome Skyline KEARNS. In a contest dominated by defense for all but the first 16 minutes, Kearns football team ran with a its region record to victory over visiting Skyline Friday and Cougar coach Tom Larsen couldn't be more tickled. I'm proud of the kids and Im really happy to be where we are, he commented. Taylorsville has the opposite league but has proven more than mark, troublesome to every team its faced. Kearns got off to a fast start against Skyline, forcing the Eagles to punt on their first possession and starting back the other way from the Cougar 42. Quarterback Reed Versluis capped the drive with a touchdown pass to Danny Cosby. The extra point try, however, was off the mark. The PAT miss enabled Skyline to 0-- move on top at when the Eagles posted a quick touchdown moments later and made good their point after 7-- attempt. With just four minutes left in the second period, Kearns wrapped up the scoring and pulled back in front to stay when Skyline fumbled at its own 24. Kearns made quick advantage of the miscue, Versluis d scoring on a keeper. Aaron Maynes hit the point after, but Kearns still held only a six point adsix-yar- vantage. In the second half, Kearns offense, in the words of coach Larsen, Larsen put it kept down to a combination of poor offensive execution and good pressure from Skylines defensive line. But the Cougar defense, led by Kava Afu and Mike Holfeltz, certainly had every reason to feel good about its performance, frustrating Skyline drives and keeping the Eagles off the score board. The kids did what they had to do defensively, noted Larsen. Our offense looked good for the first quarter-and-a-halthen we made some key mistakes that spoiled f, Murray Mighty Mites Stopjudge MURRAY. Turnovers and a big play offense paced the visiting Olympus Titans to a thorough 47-- 6 trouncing of previously unbeaten Cyprus in Region Three football action Friday night. It was a night, where everthing clicked for Oly, offensively and defensively, the kind of performance Titan coach Marc Lyons knows his team will need when in entertains Granger tomorrow (Friday) at 4 p.m., Olympus homecoming match. Like BYU against Washington, Cyprus and its coach Jerry Simonson are trying to put that experience behind them and get ready for a visit to Granite tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Simonson knows Granite is struggling, but after the Olympus game, the Pirates are taking nothing for granted. Olympus may well have put the game out of reach with a touchdown in the closing moments of the second quarter and a quick six pointer to start the third. The two scores boosted the Titans to a 20-- 0 then 26-advantage, too much distance for Cyprus to make up with Olympus playing so well. The kids just seem to be improving with each week, commented coach Lyons, both offensively and defensively. Theyre having fun out there. It certainly wasnt any fun for coach Simonson to watch them, however. If they (Olympus) could play better than they did against us, I dont want to play them again, Simonson noted. worked for Everything them, long passes and great catches and Hoggan (Kearney) has to be one of the best running backs in the state. I quess you have to put it down to the fact they executed and we didnt. Olympus opened the ball with a d touchdown run by Chris first Hansen, capping a period drive. The play was set up by a long pass from Brett Larsen to Brent Burton. Brock cVaroz added the extra point. j '1 "theTsecond in quarter, Early Larsen and Burton linked up again on a touchdown pass.' Kearney Hoggan broke a run that carried to the Pirate one. Hansen carried in for the score. Cyprus finally got on the board midway through the period, quarterback Paul Allen combining with Ryan Quintana on a pass and run. The point after try failed. But Oly wasnt finished. Still in the d third period, Larsen set up a sneak with another pass to Burton. The point after made it 33-Olympus wrapped up the quarter with a touchdown run by Hansen that, with the extra point, gave the Titans an 40-- 6 advantage. Olympus defense posted the final score as Mike Brock intercepted and ran it back for 54 yards. Larsen and Varoz also had in three-yar- terceptions that led to scores for the Titans. Ryan Losser recorded two behind-the-lin- e tackles, a pair of take downs, sacks, four first-assiand a blocked pass to earn st defensive-player-of-the-gam- e honors. Offensive, Olympus outgained Cyprus 465 yards to 168. Oly had 221 yards passing and 244 rushing, while Cyprus was 168 through the air and just eight on the ground, Hoggan was the Titans leading rusherwith 102 yards on 11 carries, while Hansen added 58 on 12 tries. Larsen was 11x17 passing With Brent Burton hauling in five receptions for 100 yards. Coach Lyons said hes definitely really afraid of a let down against Granger. Both teams knows its an important game and they both should be ready, he noted. A possible region title may hang in the balance. Individually, Afu, working on the other side of the line, picked up 65 yards rushing on 15 carries. Troy Nieberger added 28 on four tries and Holfeltz 23 on five rushes. Versluis was 10x16 passing for 100 yards, sharing the wealth with six different receivers. Looking ahead, Larsen feels tomorrows game is very important for both teams, Kearns trying to keep its unbeaten string intact and nail down a state berth and Taylorsville attempting to break into the win column before its post season chances run out. They have an interesting rivalry, just like any brother combination, said Colosimo. We need to defend their power blast, counter and double tight end formations. I feel good about our defense. To counter, the Bulldogs will do what they do best, and it isnt any secret, spread out their offense and play tough defense. On the same hand, Murray faces a similar challenge as they meet South on their own battleground. They are a good club with big kids up front, said Coach Pehrson. They are on a roll right now with a win last week. They have a good quarterback and good receivers. We have to stay out of the catch-u- p type of ball game. Pehrson confirmed that his Spartans dont like being caught behind and will take advantage of home most field advantage. Although coaches dont put stock in home field advantage, the Spartans will raise the drawbridge and try to soak the South club. Against Judge, the Spartans earned first right to royalty with a Kevin Bolingbroke seven yard rush to paydirt, getting the scoreboard to light first.
