Show THE GREEN SHEET IB At Children's Center Most of the children are referred for treatment by day-car- e centers, nursery schools, pediatricians, family medicine practitioners and social agencies, noted Mrs. Remington. However, lately, more and more parents come directly to the Center, recommended by former clients and relatives. All children are evaluated prior to admission to determine whether the center is the most appropriate placement for them. The evaluation includes psychological assessment, parent interviews and behavior scales completed by parents. Intake meetings are held weekly and children with a primary diagnosis of emotional disturbance are clinically eligible for treatment. The center has a contract with the Division of Services to the Handicapped for a specific number of children, and the division determines the financial eligibility on a sliding scale, with the fee paid directly to the Division. pre-scho- gram. Those were the comments of Karen Remington, volunteer coordinator at The Childrens Center here. More than 100 are already involved in one of the childrens groups, as helping hearts and hands, she said, while other volunteers assist with sub-fo- r Santa programs, booths at the fairs and helping with fundraising. The Childrens Center began in I960, offering services at Holladay Community church, moved to Sugar House in 1962, opened a group home with facilities for seven children in 1967, completed a facility adjacent to the University of Utah in 1970, obtained additional space at the Gilead Baptist church in 1972 and opened the Kearns Childrens Center in 1975. The Agnes M. Plenk group home was built at the Kearns location in 1983, offering residential treatment to nine children age years, and all construction was paid for, in full, in 1984, she said. Both the east side and Kearns facilities are continuing operation at full strength, she said, offering both treatresidential and ment to emotionally handicapped youngsters. The major treatment at the center is group therapy, explained Mrs. Remington. Individual treatment plans with long and short term goals are established for each child shortly after admission based on psychological evaluation, development history, observation in groups and parent interviews. Short term goals are making observable measure changes in the childs behavior. Long-tergoals are directed toward achievement of e and the trust, a positive to form meaningful relation ability Parent counseling il fees are established prior to admission in a discussion with the business administrator at the Center. 2-- 7 ' general well-being- .' -- Karen Remington periences raise the childrens children admitted day treatment attend an activity therapy group daily for three hours. Each group is directed by a primary therapist and assistant, with help from two community volunteers. Groups are composed of nine children of similar functioning levels, but with a variety of problems, explained Mrs. Remington. Some of these youngsters show their troubles by being angry and controlling; others by being shy and withdrawn, but although their symp to Pre-scho- - pt and general well being, she remarked. The group home provides 24 hours treatment seven days a week, 12 months of the year, for nine children under 7 years of age, and is, to our knowledge, the only residential facility exclusively for young childrne in the U.S.A., said Mrs. Remington. Most children stay there about three to six months. All placements must be cleared by the Juvenile -- Court and Division of Family Services. No fee is charged; the center is reimbursed by the division. The program in the group home is less structured than the day treatment program, explained Mrs. Remington. Efforts are directed toward helping the children gain skills and making self-car- e behavioral changes which will reduce strain on the family system. Participation in family counseling is a condition of admission to the Childrens Center, Mrs. Remington observed. It is extremely important to involve all parents in an ongoing treatment process, whether on an individual or group basis, she said. At times, parents and children are seen together, although the child is also in activity group therapy. In addition, the center teaches parenting skills and provides individual consultation for families. The staff of The Childrens Center share their expertise with day care centers through consultations regarding programming, special problems and developmental issues. In addition, staff members are able and willing to speak to groups at meetings. The Friends of the Childrens Center, a group of more than 2,000 people, provide support and serve as advocates for young children she throughout the community, said. Two workshops and a panel discussion are scheduled each year dealing with major issues of concern to parents, teachers and child care workers. Parents, professionals and interested citizens comprise the audience and share and contribute ideas. Anyone interested in serving as a volunteer, or becoming a Friend to The Childrens Center may call the Kearns Center, or the center located at 1855 Medical Cir. 966-425- 582-553- i Contract Carpets, Cabinets d? Wwhen wonder just how many of them will even give a thought to the man, what he stood for or the trials that Black people in this country endured? 1 suspect that Monday will simply be a much welcomed day away from the grind, and that few will give a thought to anything but skiing, shopping, irritating mother, fighting with siblings or whatever it is that kids and teachers do on those days when they dont have to report to the classroom. What it all means is that the school traditional three-mont- h vacation in the summer has been pared down to less than 2'-- months. I Michele Bartmess t Some board members felt that not observing Martin Luther King Day was sending some sort of negative message to the Black community. Those who favored observing it in school felt that its significance might be stressed more than it will be by simply taking the day off. I tend to agree with the latter philosophy. And it isn't because Im jealous of not having the day off. Though I suppose I could be. related Workers in businesses working a traditional five-da- y week generally take a holiday on New Years, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and in this state, Pioneer Day. Those involved in the service industry and most retail salespeople dont even get those. The plain fact is that days when the workforce is off are costly to employers. Which translates to you and I when it is government workers taking them off. And some teachers are saying be a costly day out of school. Students just returned to school from a long Christmas break and will have another day off later this month because of the end of an academic term. In some districts standardized tests loom in the that Monday could In determining what days would be observed out of school, some school boards debated long and hard over the King Day issue. Obviously it would not be possible to observe a near future and the teachers are day honoring every worthy American. Among those passed up for observance are veterans and Christopher Columbus. More for tradition than for any other reason, President's Day, ostensibly honoring Washington and Lincoln, is observed out of school. The most sacred observance is termed fall recess, but is in reality built around the deer hunt. Theres a financial reason for that, tied to the money paid to districts by the state related to average daily attendance. Attendance at deer hunt time is significantly down. Additionally, there are two days off for the Utah Education Assn, convention, a spring break built around the observance of Good Friday and Easter, two days for Thanksgiving and 10 days to two weeks during the Christmas season.
