Show THE GREEN SHEET 4B Thursday, January 9, 1986 ScOnooEo Teacher to Parent Helping your child t) succeed by Betty Condie President, Utah Education Association Teen-ager- s insist they can work in front of the TV or with the stereo at decible levels. g Research shows otherwise. Here are some ideas to help your child devleop good habits and do his or best in school. Provide a time and place to work. Show interest in your childs work. Ask questions, but dont nag and dont offer to do the work. Make your child understand the consequences when assignments are not completed. Express your concern, but dont aggravate the situation by scolding. Teen-ager- s often rebel against pressure. Be skeptical if you constantly hear, 1 dont have any homework, or I did it in study hall. If grades arent good, ask why. Get a clear answer. Contact the school if youre unsure. Set an example. Turn off the TV. Read. Discuss your work, what youre reading, why education is important to you personally. Encourage activities as well as academics. Most secondary schools offer many activities beyond the school day. They range from sports to artistic pursuits to academic enrichment. activities are not only fun, they teach leadership skillls, encourage teamwork and foster responsibility. One word of caution: To some these activities become more important than schoolwork. Students must recongnize that they are supplements to, not substitutes for, their major goal: a good educaiton. Many districts restrict participation in activities unless students meet certain academic standards. Check the policy at your school. Acadmeics and activities can help make the school years more Extra-curricul- teen-ager- s, DEDICATION . . .
