It happened about nine years ago while he was visiting veterans at a Veterans Administration ( VA) medical center. He stopped to chat with a blinded veteran patient for a few moments. As he began to leave, the patient began to cry and asked him to stay just a while longer. For American League umpire Larry Barnett, it was one of the most moving experiences of my life. This experience and others like it are the reason Barnett has, since 1977, visited hospitalized veterans at VA hospitals across the country in a special project sponsored by the national headquarters of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Barnett, who at 23 became the youngest major league umpire in baseball history when the American League bought his contract in 1968, will visit local hospitalized veterans at the Salt Lake VA Medical Center Monday. I feel warm inside when I leave a hospital, said Barnett, adding, If Ive made three veterans happy, I feel I've accomplished something important. Barnett said he usually tries to keep the atmosphere of his visits He gets a "light and humorous. bang out of being booed jokingly, of course, - by patients who he then "thumbs out of the game. Sometimes theyll ask him if he brought his seeing eye dog. One of his quick answers: They dont let dogs up here; I had to leave him in the lobby. stereotyped as Umpires are brash old men who don't have a sense of humor," said Barnett, who entered umpire school in Florida after graduating from high school in - 1963. But there are a lot of funny incidents that happen on and off the field in the course of season, and I really enjoy sharing them with these WITH THIS COUPON 34.50 Sewer Mains Apollo Drain & Jerry Wagstaff rises to be recognixed Monday during ceremony in which West Valley City officials took oaths of office. He lets his audience, which varies anywhere bet- ween 25 and 200 patients, change the tone of the visit whenever theyve had enough laughs over baseballs humours side. He explained that patients often want to discuss more serious topics such as strikes or how umpires weather stormy managers, players and fans. There is little doubt in his mind what he enjoys the most. Its when I get to visit the wards, and go from bed to bed meeting pasaid the Prospect, Ohio tients, native. I might only have enough time to shake their hands, get in a few clips, take a few clips from them, before I have to move on to the next bed. But you can see in their eyes how happy they are just to have someone visit them. They dont get to see many people. He continued, These guys gave up their limbs or their health for this country, and thats become important to me, especially since Ive been able to meet and talk with them on a first-han- d bais. Barnett, whose expenses are paid for by the DAV, makes between 50 and 60 visits to different VA hospitals located in or near cities where he umpires an American League game. In the off season, he spends one week each month on the road visiting VA hospitals in other cities. How much time he spends at any one hospital depends on the hospitals schedule as well as his own. Often, his schedule requires him to appear at two hospitals in one .day.
