Show THE GREEN SHEET IB 'Those Idiots' Are Really Good Guys Its human nature, curse those idiots Hall. I guess, to down at City Or the ones up at the State Capitol and in Washington. After all, they are public servants, and since we taxpayers like to think we foot the bill for their employment, we reserve the right to kick them around. At our whim. Seems we never like what theyre doing. Their efforts, at best, are characterized as willfully wasteful. But dont ask us to pick up our trash, dig graves or douse our own fires, not to mention volunteering to fill potholes, provide programs for senior citizens or obey traffic laws. Unfortunately, when we collectively complain about our public servants, we seem to lose sight of the fact that they are human beings -just like us. They have the same frustrations in their work, they dislike the cold and fog just as much as you and I do. Their marriages fail or prosper, life hands them the same good and bad times as it does you and me. They hurt, laugh and are sometimes bored. could ultimately claim his life. Food or beverage establishments with more than 10 employees are required to make tip allocations if the total tips reported by its employees are less than eight percent of the businesss gross receipts, the Internal Revenue Service says. Business operators can request the IRS to reduce this percentage to as low as five percent, if proof is provided that the average tipping rate at the establishment was that small. The 1984 Tax Reform Act opened the door for a majority of the employees, as well as the owner, to petition for a reduction of the percentage. In addition, this percentage may be as low as two percent if the establishment can show an unusually low tipping rate. Both changes were effective July 18, 1984. The written petition should be sent to the Director of Internal Revenue Service in your district with a copy of Form 8017 from the previous year and any information that will help show the reason for a a lower percentage. No one twists anyones arm. They dont have to. Usually someone in the employees department initiates the request. Following the necessary approval, a simple form letter is circulated to all employees, who may choose to donate an hour, a day or whatever they feel comfortable giving. And while hes been on the job a few years, its far less than a decade. The attitude of the workers in this city is that if someone is in need, they have something valuable that they can give. Something far beyond lip service. I suspect thats the same approach they take toward their jobs. They give their all. As I talked of this with that personnel manager, both of us were moved to tears. The chaplains at the Utah State Prison are once again asking businesses and individuals to contribute calendars for distribution to inmates at the prison, the Rev. Victor Bonnell noted. The practice began many years ago at the prison, he said. A Catholic priest, Father Bonnell is one of four prison chaplains representing the Catholic, Protestant and LDS faiths at the institution. Calendars may be dropped off at the prison in care of the chaplains, he explained, or at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church, 1085 E. 700 South, Salt Lake.
