Show r 6B THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, November i 7, 1985 Green Sheet Review rrtr THS Defies The Utah Mode As 'Men' Shine TAYLORSVILLE. The music and drama departments at Taylorsville high have defied Utah societal odds. No where in this state are men supposed to outnumber women, but they did last week on the THS stage - at least in key roles in the school musical production My Fair Lady, suberbly directed by J. Russell Johnson. And while the lady was indeed fair, it was a young man who literally stole the show. He was no ordinary man, despite his musical boasts to the contrary. Phillip Arnold as Henry Higgins turned in a masterful performance to highlight another excellent show at THS. Young Arnold handled his role to perfection both musically and as an actor. Its not an easy role for a high school actor. He was playful, mature, obnoxious and always in character. Being slightly acquainted with the young man makes his performance seem all the more remarkable. Perhaps its fitting that one of the shows very best moments was his Ive Grown Accustomed To Her Face where he was all alone on the ramp before 1200 people, seeming totally at home and obviously in command. That came nearly three hours after the overture signaled the beginning of the show. It was three hours of fine entertainment during which Arnold shared the spotlight with a host of other lead performers and a talented chorus, directed by Norman Wendel. Gabrielle Ereksons effort as Eliza Doolittle was also excellent. Her strongest attribute was her reaction to what was happening around her. Her facial expressions were always perfect and her interaction with other cast members was excellent - so very obvious during You Did It. Her best moment musically was the delightful Without You." The only flaw in her performance was a tendency to deliver lines too rapidly, which made the Cockney hard to understand. Also playing a difficult role with great success was Marty Hughes as Col. Pickering. He was always on cue, verbally and in his reactions, and he overcame a natural tendency to overdo the role, making it so much more effective than it often is among young performers. He showed off his music abilities in You Did It, but was even more entertaining after Eliza had disappeared. Brian Hulse was outstanding as Alfred P, Doolittle. Its impossible to believe that he is only a sophomore. He has stage presence way beyond his years. His character was inand he credibly shows suberb dance skills.
