Seems the men were more in- g terested in than in their women after drinking the stuff. Pappy Yokum saved the day when he counteracted the potion with one of his own, which he later admitted was just a little ol creek water. The challenge, of course, came from Pepsi, which controled 18.8 percent of the 1984 market, with Coke coming in at 21.7 - thats plain old Coke and plain old Pepsi complete with caffeine and sugar. Diet Coke corners another 5.4 percent of the market, Sprite, a Coke product, 3.6 and Tab 1.0. Diet Pepsi comes in at 3.0 percent, Pepsi Free at 2.0. The new taste was born of efforts to produce Diet Coke, which became a smashing success. A Coke executive claims that in the course of developing the diet drink the expert taste testers came upon a taste better than the old Coke. We had two options, he said. We could do nothing, put it on the shelf and forget we ever developed it. Or we could change the taste and give the world Coke was Wunnerful, Yes. . . The first being electricity, which is much like fire. It has always been with us, we just have had to learn to control and use it. Its an odd commodity. They were also vocal about their feelings toward the new product, but most of them were still carrying out cases of the new stuff, mumbling something about hoping they would get used to it in time. Pepsi, of course will attempt to capitalize on the move through advertising, which is the major reason Pepsi was able to make inroads in the first place. Personally, I dont like it (the new Coke) as well as I did the old. It does not taste like Pepsi, it more resembles Royal Crown Cola, though it still has its own distinctive taste. Its sweeter than it was, perhaps more mild, not as dry, It also has seven more calories, though still two less than Pepsi. Its going to be interesting what e effects the move will have on the industry. Personally, I used to care which one I purchased. Id avoid Pepsi, even on sale, preferring to wait until Coke was on sale, or even pay a higher price. No more. A Cola is a Cola is a Cola. Maybe Ill even try Shasta.
