Show 2B THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, March 28, 1985 Miriam Young Farnsworth - 'Woman Off Tine Year' Is Chosen by Ethel Bradford and acted and it was a lot of fun. The musicals I concentrated on were The King and I, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music and Fiddler It is with pride and satisfaction that the Green Sheet Newspaper announces Miriam (Mrs. Dean) Farnsworth as the 1985 Woman of the Year for the western area of the valley. on I met an awfully lot of fine people across the state and hope I opened the doors for some students in showing them that they could use their musical talents and be homemakers at the same time. I knew, even as a child, Miriam tells, that my life would be filled with the giving of volunteer work. I didn't know the form that work would take, but I did know that it would be my pathway. Right now I am a member of the Board of Education of Granite School District. I was asked to run for office when I stepped out of PTA and am now into my sixth year there. My parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford E. Young of American Fork, set the pattern for me. My father was a banker, one of the General Authorities of the LDS Church and also a member of the State Legislature. And, as it was during the Depression years, he was often out of town and the family spent much time without him. One of the things I am proud to have been a part of with the Board is helping to get a bond passed so that new schools can be built in the western area. The need is great. Under the direction of Supt. John Reed Call, we will now be able to continue to build schools as the need arises. At the same time, my mother, who had a fine singing voice, was aksed to sing at funerals, church functions and weddings. She also gave readings, and, in addition was the mother to five children, one of whom was an invalid. This was the life of my childhood and I accepted it as the normal, desired way to live. Four new elementary schools and Hunter Jr. high will open this fall and another junior high has been authorized for the near future. Two more elementary schools will be built and the final portion of the bond will be another high school in the Hunter area. I majored in music at the BYU and it was there I first met Dean. He, however, had his own commitments. He served 316 years in World War II and then spent 2 years filling an LDS mission before we started dating seriously. We married in 1948 and, with the passing years, became the parents of six children. Like most women, my volunteer work began with PTA and helping in church and schools. In the PTA the president of that group. All together I spent 25 years in PTA. "At the same time, however, I was giving reviews of Broadway musicals and presenting them in schools, churches and various programs all over the state. I both sang organization I was both vice president and president of the local group; then a member of the Granite'Oquirrh Council and later I If you see this Ad, bring it to store and receive a gift In another distinctly different branch of service, Miriam has served in the LDS Church Social Service organization in the area of adoptions for six years. Her work is interviewing couples hoping for a child and then following the cases right on through to court finalization of placing the child in the arms of the new parents. I have noticed in my children, and now my 17 grandchildren, that the idea of volunteer service is continuing. Dean and I firmly believe that the children will automatically emulate their parents and if they see their parents going this route, with joy and happiness, then they will do the same.
