Underlying pletely forgetting that what we need to do is keep the heart pumping and teach it to like it. the great modern increase in heart disease is the irony that while we are traveling faster, we are hardly moving. Why? Because we have all become victims of motoritis exchanging MAM (more movement) for more RAR (rest and relaxation), com fc. w' s , VfTLt '' ' Strange as it may seem, people often neglect one of the most natural and beneficial forms of exercise -walking. Somehow they are inclined to think that walking is for old women and little kids. v However, the truth is walking is most definitely not a sissy form of exercise. It is an important activity, especially for the flabby sedentary male who is a leading candidate for a coronary. Sidney Matz is a classic example of one who looked into the future and didnt like what he saw. The revelation was triggered eight years ago through the plight of three of his friends who had to have open heart surgery: Accompanying every one of them to the hospital and standing beside their bed in intensive care, he had said to himself: My God, Id rather die right now than go through all that misery. So he decided to take a good long look at himself and found that he came up sorely lacking. At age 57, instead of being 175 pounds of whip cord muscle, he was 220 pounds of flab. Twenty years at a sedentary job and a lifetime of wrong food habits had done such a job on his body; he tired easily and his breath came in short pants. The job he had been doing was one of the most sought after in the refinery. It entailed keeping an eye on pressure guages, but there was very little movement involved. Recognizing that if he didnt use it, he would lose it, Matz bid off his "cushy job for the hardest one in the plant. A short time later he hired on in the stripping section at the refinery which involved a lot of manual labor that was really hard Ken-neco- tt work. m He was so out of shape that by the time he had stripped two racks and oiled one, he had to be carried out of the work area. However, as time went on and his physical stamina increased, he was soon helping other workers do their job. In addition to transferring to a harder job, Matz started walking the miles to work. On the way home he would go all the way to 7200 West, then up to 4100 South for an extra mile and a half to get home. At first it took him 2Vfe-- 3 hours to make it home, but as time went on he cut his time down to an hour and a half. He walked that route summer, winter, spring and fall in all kinds of weather, until it became such a habit he felt unfulfilled if he didnt walk on his days off. When he retired three years ago, he continued to walk and not a day goes by that he doesnt walk his five miles, only now instead of walking west, Matz walks south and sometimes east. He walks to the Bacchus Works every night and during summer months, he and his wife Esther often walk to Alpha Beta in West Valley City. In addition, they ride their bikes, with their longest trip being to visit their daughter in Highland, near Alpine in Utah County. Wherever we go on our vacations, we always walk up into the hills, he said, you cant imagine how beautiful the country is (even around here) when you are walking and you see so much more than 'In fact, all your senses perk up and you get a high you can't explain ? La Although ho Is rotirod now, Sid Matz rotracos tho rout ho walkod to work whilo employed at Konnecott. FAMILIAR ROUTE . . . unless you have experienced it.' -- - Sidney Matz ) ... A WALKER Sid Matz of Magna, an avid walker, wears headgear received as a gift from Europe. when you are flying by in a car. Nothing does you any good unless you can feel it, he continued, and literally every part of the human body is called upon to perform when you are walking. Your lungs dilate with fresh, invigorating air. The muscles stretch and turn and knead with every step. Limbs, neck, rib cage, pelvis, spine and buttocks all move in coordinated rhythm, joints to oil themselves automatically make the going smooth. In fact, all your senses perk up and you get a high you cant explain unless you have experienced it," he added. Remember, he continued, the dropout rate for walkers is far less than for those who particiate in the more strenuous exercises, and walking hardly ever knocks its participants out of commission because of orthopedic mishaps, like jogging sometimes does. Then too, there is much more companionship in walking together than in running together, because high intensity exercise allows little or no time or breath for conversation. Matz also claims that the benefit of walking includes not only loss of weight, but improvement of mental well being, strengthening of the heart, tightening the abdominal muscles and stimulation of the bodys metabolism. Most importantly though it reduces tensions by inducing a moderate fatigue that helps a person sleep like a baby, he went on. To supplement the loss of muscular movement of his arms that his job provided, Matz bought a set of weights and now pumps iron. He hjfs a special program that he incorporates into his day. He does the weights in the morning as part of a regular routine that includes jogging on a to limber up his legs. During the summer months he plays golf e every day in addition to his walk. As to his diet, gone are the days of the jellied doughnuts and fried foods. Now his meals consist mostly of fresh fruits and vegetables, with very little meat. As a result, Sidney Matz is a shadow of his former self, with a whole new outlook on life, and he has a better than average chance of living in good health to a peaceful, happy, ripe old age. , five-mil- DONT BIOW FT.
