Show 8 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, December & 35' 6, 1984 (Mug THE LEGISLATURE 75 DOUBLE CUT By SfMATOB BIU BABTOM Diitrict 12 We are recognizing many priorities in education today, but one that we do not hear enough about is the available schooling in our vocational, technical and career education, such as courses offered at Utah Technical Colleges of Provo and Salt Lake. Both have felt increases in demands for services and these demands will get greater in the near future. Public education, grades K through 12, has experienced dramatic increases in numbers of students for the last four years and this trend is projected to continue throughout the eighties. These students, after leaving high school, are going to impact our career and technical classes more than they will be typical academic classes in the colleges. About 75 percent of the job openings presently, and for the next few years, are projected to require less than a four year college degree. This means there will be a much greater demand for classes at our career-oriente- d facilities. Because of the many changes going on in our industrial sector, the need for retraining and skill updating is going to bring increased demand upon our vocational schools. With the new, higher entrance requirements at our colleges and universities, we will surely experience more requests for classes colat our technical and two-yeleges for remedial classes, as well as the basic associated degree related classes. The factors all point to the same dilemma . . . that of a dire shortage ar of available classes. There is varied opinion on how to address the pro- blem, but most require a great deal of additional money. Most opinions and ideas only address a part of the challenge. Some individuals suggest that we gradually change our technical colleges to a community college concept because of some of the changes in demands. There has already been a movement to change the name of Utech at Provo. Other people are looking at a new county-wid- e community college district system, while some have suggested merely a massive addition to existing higher education facilities. ' It is my opinion that there should not be any name changes at this time, and there should not be any changes in the basic missions of the schools. It seems reasonable to me that, first, we must require full utilization of all facilities at all schools; second, it is imperative that we set a goal of complete cooperating and collaboration between and among all education entities, both public and private; and thirdly, we must accept the fact that many classes will be held off campus in other available schools, libraries, municipal buildings or even business houses.
