Show r 1 SAYS SHE It seems like only yesterday that Olympus highs Kathy Carpenter and Grangers Steve Frazier were among the first to receive Green Sheet Performing Arts Awards. performance as Mother Superior in The Sound of Music and as Steve T e v e y In Fiddler on the Roof. The awards, over the years, have pretty well been spread throughout the eight schools in the Green Sheet area. The traveling trophy for Show of the Year, signifying the best musical production, has been won by five, while the Best Nonmusical award, instituted in 1979, has been displayed at four different schools. Siblings have won on several occasions, most notably from Granite high where Nataleen Davis was a female lead winner in 1981, her brother Nathan a male lead winner a year later, and Jeanette (1978) and Mike Romero (1980) each won Audience Appeal awards. From Murray high Heidi (1982) and Eric Gant (1983) pocketed awards. This year Nanette Horman of Cottonwood is a double nominee. Her sister Michelle won in 1980 and 81. Kirsten Brady of Olympus was a winner in 1980; her sister Wendy is a nominee this year. One of the most exciting is wat- aspects of the program ching the nominees and winners go on to achieve at a higher level. Michelle Horman has and will continue to be performing at Pioneer Memorial Theatre. Granites Lonnie Eschler has made quite a name for himself in Salt Lake acting circles. Robert Lund (Cottonwood), the first male supporting actor to be honored, played the lead in the Murray park production last summer. The previous year, Kirsten Brady had the female lead. Russ Cuff, a nominee, but not a winner from Kearns high, played the same role (Lt. Cable) in PMTs South Pacific. Cyprus highs Derrick Merrill, who was involved in another of the sibling situations along with his sister Monta, was seen often at the Lagoon Opera House and at PMT. Murrays Dan DeNiro completed his studies at Julliard School of Drama. Undoubtedly there have been others who have excelled here and elsewhere. The students come and go, but the one constant has been the faculty members who have a great deal to do with the success their students have enjoyed. Many have been involved since Bowman Chamber Business Award Is Presented TAYLORSVILLE. The secretary of a department store manager was honored here Thursday during a lun cheon session in which the guest speaker painted an encouraging picture of current conditions in the con struction industry. Charlie Brown of Cyprus high and Gae Cowley, who started at Kearns, and last year filled in for Joan Hahn at Cottonwood, had a lot to do with our getting involved in the first place. While only one student in each category may earn a certificate, all who participated in a school production, nominated for an award or not, are winners. As are the faculty members whose involvement is so critical. For all of us at the Green Sheet, the look on the face of a winner Wednesday night will make every moment of a rather difficult month more than worthwhile. We hope youll want to be on hand to share it with us. The program is open to the general public at no charge. The show directors at each school help a great deal all during the year, but especially now. Already, the newest member of the family, Mary Marsh of Granite, has proven most helpful. Weve had a variety of talented masters of ceremonies. The past two years it has been Robyn Bishop. She teaches drama in another district and her interest in the program has been keen. For the first five years the awards were announced in the newspaper and given out at various school assemblies. In 1980, the first evening program was held, bringing together the nominees, their families and friends and interested members of the communities. Cuts from the various shows are presented, interspersed with awards. Its been a far more satisfactory method of recognizing the performers and those who guide them. Actually, a decade has gone by since Kathy was honored for her OB SAT. Serving in her present capacity the past 10 years, Mrs. Bowman was initially employed by ZCMI in 1944, spent six years with Auerbachs, then returned to ZCMI in 1961, working in sales, clerical duties, as a receptionist and secretary. A native of Monroe, Utah, she and her husband Victor have two daughters, Jan and Patricia.
