Alta Claims Victory Cougars Stumble Alta ruined Kearns Two debut here Tuesday, downing the Cougars 15-It was an unexpected turn of events for Coach Larry Hatch and his crew which had gotten solid pitching in a pair of outings. The Cougars had beaten South and lost a decision to Murray. The Hawks jumped on starter Jim Mitchell for 10 runs in the first three innings. Chris Nelson came on in relief, yielding two runs in the fifth and three in the seventh. The Cougars could not overcome the slow start. They scored a run in the first, three in the fourth, a pair in the fifth and Rob Lambert stroked a homer in the seventh, but the KEARNS. highs Region pre-leag- 2 3-- 2 Cougars were limited to six hits and struck out 11 times. Lambert, Rick Wiles and Gary Bronson had extrabase hits in the contest. Kearns returns a veteran crew, but must contend with a killer schedule. Bingham, Taylorsville and Hillcrest may be the states best three teams and every team in Region Two has a realistic shot a n action. However, only four will make the field. Nelson and Mitchell anchor the pitching staff. Also slated for action are Joe Quintana, Rick Medina and Greg Carver. Carver, Quintana and Wiles make up the outfield, with the latter two being juniors. Lambert is the Cougar catcher. Mitchell and Nelson share first base duties. Junior Gary Bronson is at second and Wade Jensen is the shortstop. Medina plays third. Also expected to a see action are juniors Nick in the infield and Kent Kolb in the outfield. Kearns will try to square its record at today (Thursday) at Brighton. On Monday the Cougars are slated to host Bingham and will play Wednesday at West Jordan. Just Green Sheet place a low-co- Green Sheet Coach of the Year for the second time after his team finished eighth in the state AT WORK , . . Granger high basketball coach Scott Iverson instructs his team during state tournament confrontation. Iverson has been named Second Time Launcher In - Granger's Iverson Gains Coaching Citation Again MURRAY. A .500 record doesnt often qualify a coach for laurels, but an eighth place finish in the state tournament for a team that most experts predicted could actually be winless says something both about coaching and the response of the players. Those factors have earned for Granger high mentor Scott Iverson his second Green Sheet Coach of the Year award. The Green Sheet gave serious consideration to both Ron Huber of Olympus and Judge Memorials Jim Yerkovich. Huber had a flossy 20-record with his talented quintet and Yerkovich took a young team to the and a third place state semi-final- s 2 COMPLIMENTS OF s IftJBSU AND THE NEW SELF SERVICE CAR WASH 5400 SO. 3685 WEST KEARNS CAR CARETS O R , IQ U yrsrrTr finish. Huber himself said that Iverson should be coach of the year after his Titans had defeated the Lancers in the consolation championship contest at the state tournament. Iverson opened the season with only one proven performer in undersized forward Jeff Willardson. An underdog in virtually every contest, the Lancers stunned a lot of people this season. In the Green Sheet tournament they downed the g Kearns favorite and Cougars, then lost the title contest on a prayer shot to a talented Taylorsville squad. The tournament record, their record, league record and state tourney record were all .500. When predictions were made in Region Three, Granger was never mentioned as a potential factor. But those same coaches came back with fear of what Iverson and his crew might do to their own records. The Lancers finished in a tie for second place with Cyprus, and while they didnt crack the Olympus mystique, everyone else had their record marred by the Lancers. In his five years as Lancer mentor, Iverson has never missed the tournament. state Everyone thought this season the Lancers should be content to just be there. But they werent. After stumbling in the opener, they beat a tall Viewmont team on a d shot. Then they shocked the Utah sports world. East, like Olympus, was upset in the first round. A region champion, the Leopards had realistic dreams of playing for the title. Thanks to Granger, they didnt make it to the final days play. The Lancers had a lead at half-tim- e and sent the Leopards home with red faces.
