Handmade clocks will be gracing the mantels of area families as students at West Lake junior high complete a woodshop project that has earned praise from many parents. The students learn many skills from fathers, older brothers and in school that help teach them use of tools, but do not necessarily leave them with a finished product that they can see in use and take pride in, observed teacher Jim Loosle. This project has given them something to see, something they have done that is really appreciated, he said. Many calls have been received from parents expressing their feelings about the project and saying they feel they have invested their money in something worthwhile, he noted. Two students sent clocks to grandparents living in Texas and in Florida and received letters of thanks, along with a request to build MontfiTPlans Are Posted ' At St. Francis KEARNS. Activities and more clocks for neighbors who had seen them and wanted to buy one, he observed. One student plans to attend summer school, with the goal of making three more clocks to sell, he said. Seventy clocks will be completed by seventh and ninth graders in the class, using mass production methods for producing the parts, said Mr. Loosle. One group of students cuts out the tops, another group the side pieces, groups alternate doing sanding, routing, then and it is a good experience to have a mix of girls and boys in shop classes. It used to be only the boys took shop, but its a good field for girls too, and they enjoy making pieces and look forward to using them, he remarked. The project has increased the students skills in using and caring for tools, their knowhow on assembling pieces, their each student takes the various parts and assembles his or her own clock. Students put in the movements and dials and do the finishing, handrubbing the clock with Danish oil, the teacher added. Enthusiasm among students is high and they have very much enjoyed the project, he said. There are anywhere from three to five girls in each class, remarked the teacher, whether as a work experience or in his own home, remodeling, building in creating a beautiful piece for the home Woodshop also offers the student skills to use throughout his life, furniture, or in other areas, DANGER SIGNALS OF PINCHED NERVES 1.
