Skyline Boys, Girls Claim Swim Crowns Colt Girls Grab Second GRANGER. Only the meets top teams registered first place finishes as Skyline edged Cottonwood in the Region Three girls swimming meet which concluded here Thursday. Two girls were double winners and three others scored repeats of 1983 conquests during competition which most observers felt would be close between the Eagles and the Colts. The Skyline delegation built up a lead at the close of Wednesdays action, winning four of the first five events, then traded off with Cottonwood on the final six to win by 27. Following in order were Cyprus, tlympus, Granger and Granite. Sophomore Kenna Sorensen of Cottonwood claimed the first of two victories she chalked up in individual competition, winning the freestyle, then came back the next day with an equally comd fortable win in the lreestyle. The meets only other double winner was Skyline senior Joni Young, ind with victories in the dividual medley and the butterfly. Cottonwood junior Holly Whear repeated her 1983 win in the backstroke, as did Skyline seniors Kim Carlson in the freestyle and Buffy Quilter in the breaststroke. The other Cottonwood first place came in the meets last event, the freestyle relay. The Colt team, nearly 13 seconds ahead of two 100-yar- 200-yar- 100-yar- d 100-yar- d 500-yar- d 100-yar- d 400-yar- d runner-u- Skyline, will be p represented at state by, including alternates, Wendy Rex, Michele Tyler, Whear, Holly Sorensen, Cindy Moler, Kenna Nancy Downs and Milessa Segersted. State competition will be held tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday at the UofU. Those finishing first and Tourney Action Is Under Way KEARNS. Tournament action is under way in County Recreation leagues. Title games in the A divisions will he played Saturday at Kearns high, with the peewees playing at 9 : 30, the pirls at 10:45, the midgets at 12:15 r,id the juniors at 1:30. A pair of double winners from Green Sheet area schools and repeats of 1983 individual titles in four events highlighted the Region Three boys swimming championships which concluded here Thursday with Skyline claiming the team crown. Coach Steve Marsings favored Eagles claimed first place in only two events, calling on depth to propel them nearly 80 points ahead of the runner-u- p Cyprus team. In order behind the Pirates were Granger, Granite, Cottonwood and Olympus. The Region Three teams will be pursuing state 4A honors tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday at the University of Utah. The first two finishers in region competition qualify for state, along with those whose region times stand the test of comparison with times recorded in other 4A regions. In diving competition, the balance of the field was determined in a dive-of- f held at Cottonwood high yesterday. In last week's competition, Cottonwood high junior Craig Sorensen captured a pair of races, repeating d last years victories in the individual medley and the butterfly. The only other double winner in individual competition was Olympus highs Ian Brooks, who claimed victory in the freestyle, as well d as the freestyle events. Also repeating a 1983 title was Cyprus highs Pete Wetterhall in the d freestyle. Wetterhall nudged Skylines Steve Johnson by .12 of a second in that race, then missed by nearly the same margin being a double winner the next day when Sorensen edged him in the fly by just .16 of a second. Repeating his 1983 region diving championship in convincing fashion was Granger senior Alan Thurber, who amassed more than 462 points, topping the nearest competitor by 200-yar100-ya- 100-yar- 200-yar- 133-plu- s. Granger also claimed two other in- dividual titles. Senior Mike Ayers - Runners-u- p edged Skylines Andy Hayes by less d than half a second in the breaststroke, while Lancer junior Craig Cole topped Cottonwoods in Tyler Long by four seconds-plu- s d the gruelling freestyle.
