Show 4 WEST VALLEY VIEW tvrnt V Thursday, Feb. 9, , ''. KEARNS. Our Flag will be the title of a patriotic program to be presented at 7 oclock tonight (Thursday) at Gourley elementary. About 160 first grade and special education students will participate in the program, which will present the history of the American Flag, using dialogue, songs and the building of a flag on stage. I Pledge Songs will include Our Allegiance to the Flag, Yankee Doodle, There Flag, Are Many Flags in Many Lands, Glory to the Flag, Flag Song and The Star Spangled Banner. Lead roles will be played by Craig Stitcher as George Washington and Reija Ilijic as Betsy Ross. Teachers involved with the production are Loice Ann Oreno, Michaela Carrera, Susan Gardner, Cherrell Smith, Lois Odysseus, and Connie Peterson, special education teacher. The Flip Flop Reading Road Rally for 1984 will begin at Magna elementary Monday, following a CB trucker theme. Patriotic Program $ i x -- 1984 oim.um sheet. The rally will continue until March 9. The checkpoint sheet must be returned to school, signed by a parent, by March 14. Every student at the school may participate and may choose as a partner one of his par- ents or grandparents or an older brother or sister. Each student and his partner will select a nickname and 90 percent or 18 of the 20 checkpoints must be completed to receive an award. Daily reading times of 15 minutes or one hour and 15 minutes weekly, must be recorded on the sheet. The rally takes four weeks to complete. If time is a problem, officials in charge noted that several checkpoints could be done in one day. It was also noted that the first day (Monday) one of the checkpoints is to go to the library. The library, however, will be closed because of Lincolns birthday. The visit to the library will also be to select four books, which the driver and partner will read to each other, then the driver will choose a character from the. story... they jead together and make up a story about him. i The second week the partner will choose a household cleaning product and they will read the warning label together. Then, using a road map, they will locate a town where a relative lives, outside of Magna. In addition, they will read a newspaper article about something happening in Magna and make a list of 10 words that are pronounced the same but have different spellings. Week number three the driver and partner choose a recipe and prepare it together, and the driver will draw a map showing his partner the route he takes to school every day. They will also read a magazine article together, go to the library and locate a nonfiction book of their choice using the computer access system and write a poem about the snowy winter. The final week will be devoted to the partner hiding a treat for the driver with clues on how to find it and the driver doing likewise. Then, using the yellow pages, they will choose a restaurant that looks Inviting. Also using the classified directory, they will find the north-sout- h coordinates for Military Way land conclude the effort by the driver writing a thank you note to the partner. Students who complete the road rally will receive a certificate and a treat to be shared with their partner. Programs Aimed At Children Being Promoted KEARNS. Registration for participation In the Kearns Bobby Sox League is scheduled here three times in the next two weeks. Those wishing to sign up may go to the top floor of Zions First National Bank from p.m. Monday. Also, registration sessions will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Feb. 18 and from 6 p.m. on Feb. 25.
