The students are performing skits as a means of learning more about totalitarian societies. A Contrast To Present Freedoms , Liberties , Rights - Bennion JHS Students Hail 'Chairman In Totalitarian State studies unit is now directed by Alan Bailey, the principal added. As in any new program, the curriculum is still being developed and adapted, with new materials accumulating to stimulate and challenge the students, he observed. In order to give the program a personality of its own, the acronym BenStar has been applied, taken from Bennion Student Thinkers And Researchers, explained the principal. The name has been so well accepted that students, staff and parents all use it in referring to the program, he noted. Mr. Bailey said his class using the simulation is being well accepted by students who find it a unique way to learn about another, often misunderstood, life style. Purpose of the unit is to expose the ideas, slogans and realities of totalitarianism so that students will understand the seriousness of surrendering their civil liberties, Mr. Bailey said. The most dominating and obnoxious political force of the 20th Century has been totalitarianism. Because of the rise of total- by Olga Milius BENNION. A unit on The State, a totalitarian simulation, is in use for a class of gifted and talented eighth and ninth graders at Bennion junior high. The program for gifted and talented students was established last year, with students scoring above the 90 percentile on the Stanford Achievement Test and approved by their teachers being invited to participate in classes including math, English, social studies and science, explained Glen Smith, principal. Parental approval was also required, he noted. Some students qualified for all four classes, others for fewer, but no student was forced into the program which is entirely optional, he remarked. Original teachers in the program were Barbara Marsh, social studies, Merrill Pulley, science; Joyce Schelstate, English and Ben Lems, math. The math program has been dropped this year and the social Fourth, a test will be given to reinforce learning that has taken place. There is a state salute, I.D. cards, armbands, all the trappings of a police state, said Mr. Bailey. Those involved must salute members of the party and I.D. cards must be shown when asked for. Party members must wear the armbands during school hours to set them apart. A state anthem must be memorized and sung and there is a Hail Chairman exercise that must be used. Personnel in the State include Bert Bertoeh, chairman. He is the leader - always right and explained Mr. Bailey. The teacher plays the role of State Prosecutor and conducts trials, he added. Magistrates include Patricia Barney, Michelle Kitchen and Jeff Arnold. They are empowered to deduct or add points to a students grade and decide if he is guilty or not guilty at trial. The State Police include Jon Barney, Matt Ransom. They enforce the laws of the Chairman and the Party Constitution. More than half of the worlds people live in nearly totalitarian societies, while many more live in states that exhibit totalitarian controls, he noted. Our students live in a democracy and generally take it for granted. This simulation hopes, in some way, to help the students appreciate more fully the rights, liberties and freedoms they enjoy, Mr. Bailey said. The project was developed by Dave Chavis, teacher at Brighton high. The simulation has been divided into four parts to make it a valuable learning experience for students, he explained. The first phase acquaints students with the types of totalitarianisms, gives them a vocabulary of terms used in the system and analyzes the basic principles of a modern totalitarian state. Part two is the actual simulation. Students spend time in a model of a totalitarian state. Part three involves processing and evaluation. Discussions will be held to give students an opportunity to verbalize their feelings and the concepts they have learned.
