Show SB WEST VALUY VIM SAYS SHE Its hard to believe that at age, Im still learning some of lifes little lessons. my learned another just last week. Dont get so caught up In your life or your work that you e- I forget to xperience - in pleasure other words, stop and smell the roses. m Because I perceived as myself just too busy to give up an evening, I almost let Pioneer Memorial Theatres Barnum get past me. Quite by accident Thursday, I found myself taking advantage of one last chance to see the show after it was extended one night. Knowing what I know now, Id never forgive myself if I had missed it. Which doesnt do you a whole lot of good, if you missed it. But perhaps the lesson can be taken to heart. All too often, we spend so much ' time doing things we think we have to do that we neglect those things that make us grow in other areas, or touch our senses. Tired for a whole bunch of reasons, I found myself picked up and swept into another world by Barnum. In my humble opinion, it is the best show Ive seem at PMT. I havent seen them all, but certainly more than my fair share. Perhaps it was so appealing because it was fresh and different. I didnt go there with any preconceived ideas of what it should be like. It turned out to be like nothing Ive ever seen before - including the circus. But it stirred memories of what the circus was to me as a child (and Baileys) circus -The Greatest Show on Earth. I particularly remember going once with my grandfather and those memories were touched as I watched the play roll to its conclusion. There are circuses and there is the Barnum and Bailey variety. Even after all these years and considering that performances are no longer under the Big Top, but generally in facilities such as the Salt Palace, there is that spark that sets The Greatest Show on Earth apart from your average circus. I dont know a great deal about Phineas Taylor Barnums life and I realize that authors take poetic license. Involved in all sorts of exciting showtime activities, the cast transported the audience out of the workaday world into a magical place where all was exciting and extremely colorful. Cast members had to do more than simply learn lines and a few dance steps. Some performed trapeze acts. Others juggled. Cot- grad Michelle played the trumpet. No one was ever still. Even music director James Prigmore got into the act. At one point I actually felt my pulse racing as the cast helped tell the story of Bamums life, and more importantly, his tonwood high Hor-ma- n legacy. Anyone over age 18 who is in good health and has not donated blood during the past six weeks may donate. Persons over 65 will need a doctors certificate. But PMT shouldnt be the end of our exposure to the performing arts. Theres a great deal of enjoyment to be had at every level. Whether it be a local school production, a community theater effort or the many other cultural opportunities that are accorded us, attending is a way to find ones way out of the stress of everyday life. Plays, concerts, the ballet and other cultural events deserve a place in our lives, a prominent one. Too often were willing to let television feed us our entertainment and forget the value of live performances. I hope I remember how I felt Thursday night during and after Barnum. And I hope I remember that I had to almost force myself to go, so that next time the struggle against myself will be just a little easier. Participants may receive free blood if needed.
