A spokesman for the faculty at the school especially encouraged former students to be on hand. It will be held in the schools media center. Petersen, a veteran of 39 years in the classroom, 28 of them in Granite School District, will compete for national honors by virtue of his winning the state honor. He currently teaches fifth grade. Petersen's students have long been exposed to the basics and more, district officials note. VIEW YourWeek Ahead Horoscope Accorded State Honor MILITARY. MST VALLEY 7 Teaching GRANGER. Not many people jump out of airplanes and 1 just felt it was something I wanted to do. The remark was by Terry Poulsen, who at 17 is proudly wearing the silver wings of a Green Beret. The Kearns high student, son of Bent and Annya Poulsen of West Valley, spent his summer training for the Army National Guard 19th Special Forces C Co. He had eight weeks of basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., then four weeks of jump train-- ! ing and practice at Fort Benning, Ga. I really enjoyed it all, he re- marked, The only part I didnt like was the hurry up and wait when we had to sit in full rig for anywhere up to two hours, three times a day in 103 degree heat, waiting to board the planes, he added. To young Poulsen, basic was just the necessary preliminary to his real Interest, jump training. Jumphop, he exing started with a plained. After that, trainees were supposed to practice increasingly high jumps from the tower, but that part of the training was rained out, said Terry, and he went from 35 to 2,000 feet. I wasnt scared because they didnt give us time to get scared, he observed. Although he sprained an ankle on his second jump, the youth persevered, knowing if he held off on completing his required number of jumps, he would have to begin all over again. By postponing his return to school for a week, he was able to complete the training and earn his wings. He will now train with the 19th Special Forces at Camp Williams until high school graduation, at J which time he will receive six mon- ths of AIT (Advanced Individual Training) and become a member of the Special Forces. r Naturally I worried a good deal j about Terry, but I think the training has been good for him, said Mrs. I Poulsen. He seems very young to ! be a Green Beret, but he has matur- ed during the summer and seems to t have a real goal in life now, she 5 remarked. With a husband who spent 20 years in the Air Force and a daughter, Chris, with four years of Air Force I ; life behind her, it seemed natural that Terry should want to go into the service, his mother noted. He learned to make his own deci-- ; sions, to rely on his own judgement and to work with and rely on others in his team, she observed. The men in the Special Forces learn that they have to help each other, to forego an individual ego trip for the good of the group. If one fails, they all have to start the unit over, so they soon learn to stop and help each other. They learn the importance of working as a team, that life depends on teamwork. I think that has helped Terry mature and grow, she said. I ; 28th WE'RE CELEBRATING OUR ANNIVERSARY WITH A STOREWIDE. . . 1 (XsEHD 1 TOYS! CLOTHING! HOBBIES! DOLLS!
