Show After Losing Heartbreaker - Youth Play Warriors Looking For Way To Score TAYLORSVILLE. Finding a path to the end zone will be the number one priority for Taylorsville highs grid team tomorrow (Friday) when it hosts Kearns in a Region Two battle. The Warriors enter the game 1 in the region because of inability to score down deep Friday against a stubborn Alta defense. Overlooking Kearns would be a mistake. The Cougars are desperate for a victory and the emotions run high against the Warriors. Kickoff is scheduled at 0-- 4:30. In Fridays outing, Coach Doug Bills called on backup quarterback Phil Evans in an effort to get some offense. While Evans was able to move the team, line protection broke down several times. The most telling statistic was moving inside the 20 four times and coming up empty, including twice in the fourth quarter with the game on the line. A second-quarte- r interception of a Mike Littlewood aerial set up the first Hawk score. Just before the half, Keith Lever booted a field goal to narrow the margin to The Warriors took a quick 10-- 7 3. Late lead in the third period when Evans scored from the three. Lever was forced to boot a long PAT when the Warriors were whistled for pass interference on a conversion try. Late in the game after a series of sacks, a try by Lever to tie was just wide of the mark. Alta won the game when Pete Morley picked off an Evans pass and returned it 60 yards for a score late in the third period. Statistically, the Warriors won the battle, chalking up 259 yards of offense. Evans threw for 148 on 7x22 and Littlewood added 30 on 4x9. Alta was limited to a single pass completion and 107 yards of offense by the stubborn Warrior defense. Littlewood recovered a Hawk fumble and Richard Staples intercepted a pass. Others cited for their play were Chris Van Leeuwen, Pat Keating, Jim Walton and Jerry Taylor. Coach Doug Bills also praised Jack Bird and Jim Rogers. He admitted he was disappointed in the outcome of the game, but felt his team still had the ability to make the playoffs. We have to start by winning one game at a time - with Kearns, he stated. two-poi- -- Beats Bucs TD Will Try At THS an KEARNS. Kearns had more yardage than the Bengals and continued to show improved play. But it went for naught. And while other regions were still honing their skills for league play, that one counted and the Cougars in Region Two. are Kearns will travel to Taylorsville for another league test tomorrow (Friday) at 4:30 p.m. The two teams are in the brief history of what is an already intense rivalry. The Warriors lost a tough decision to Alta and were figured to be one of the top teams in the region before the season began. Just a half minute before half-tim- e Friday the Cougars were involved in touchdown and helped key the defense. Also cited for their play were Carl Pyper, Lance Richards, Mike Alire and Ryan Lowther. 19-- 0 The Junior squad dropped a 277 test to Woods Cross. Darrell Rasmussen scored the touchdown. Coaches cited Richard Coombs, Steve Embley and David Staples for their play, along with John Emmel and William Kinikini. The Peewee A squad dropped a 14-decision to Jordan. Shawn Peterson scored the touchdown. Among those cited by the coaches were Chris Foote, Travis Crowther, Sean Moon, Ricky Slaugh, Spencer Melby and Lance Roberts. 1 1 Kearns The Kearns Mitey Mites won their second game of the season, beating Granite 19-- After a campaign, Cyprus high gridders will put its string of playoff appearances squarely on the line tomorrow ( Friday ) . The Pirates will take a short bus ride to Granger where they will be guests at the Lancer Homecoming. It's a tough league opening assignment for the Bucs, who lost a heart-breakpre-leag- Friday in Logan. Defensively, Cyprus has enjoyed success, but the offense has not yet gotten untracked. Granger features a punishing ground game that is sure to test the Pirate defenders. The Lancers have been solid defensively as well. Logan picked up its first win of the season at the expense of Cyprus Friday, scoring on a pass play with just seconds left. The Grizzlies started their winning drive after holding Cyprus on a fourth and inches play at the Logan 30. A pass interception accounted for the other Logan score in the first period. Cyprus answered with a dash by Chad Fuller in the second period.. The loss gave the Bucs a 2 record. The Pirate rushing game accounted for 219 yards. Four interceptions hampered the passing game. Todd Christianson completed 7x16 attempts for 55 yards. A1 Kamidoi led the rushing attack with 85 yards on 22 carries and caught two passes. Coach Bill Hunter was pleased with his defensive effort. Player of the game honors went to Cory Rom-mel- l. Mike Lantz also gained praise. The Bucs forced four turnovers, with Greg Hensen, Brian Densley and Joe Gallegos picking off passes and Mike Monserret recovering a fumble. Penalties compounded the Pirate problems. Twice the Bucs were whistled for major infractions in Logans winning drive. Lancers Lose To Braves GRANGER. Despite a 14-- 7 loss to Bountiful Friday, Granger enters Region Three competition with a solid reputation - the Lancers will be favored in most league outings. Region play begins tomorrow (Friday) at 4:30 when the Lancers host Cyprus for Homecoming. While Cyprus has yet to jell, a Granger-Cypru- s contest always produces fireworks. Both teams are coming off heartbreaking losses. Granger must contend with the Cyprus quickness. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander - I guess, commented Coach Mike Fraser after he saw his team dominate the game The statistically, but lose 14--- previous week Granger had defeated an Alta team that owned the statistical edge. Kelly Foote scored from the three after a pass completion to Mike Wilding. Take back two plays and Granger In the third period, Bounwins tiful struck for two long pass plays, one covering 91 yards, another 73. Between those stunners, Granger had a fumble after a pass completion down deep. Granger was its own worst enemy, fumbling three times and having a pair of passes picked off. Bountiful did not turn the ball over. Foote rushed 22 times for 117 yards, while Randy Weiss had 60 and Wilding 40. Mitch Mills completed 4x6 passes and Joe Candelaria in a sub role hit 8x15. Fraser was uncertain which would start tomorrow. Fraser acknowledged that his team learned a lesson in Fridays outing. He felt it may have been overconfident going in and the easy drive at the start of the game compounded that problem. The Granger defense limited the Braves to negative yardage on the ground. The two long pass plays contributed to the total of 158 yards. Foote was the choice for offensive player of the game honors, while the defensive plaudits went to Scott Mortensen. -- 7-- Try a Green Sheet Want Ad ! a win. Dallon Pace scored the touchdown through a hole opened by Andy Graft and Chad Bonella. Shane Lyon recovered a tumble. Todd Eglund scored twice for the Bantam A team, once on a kickoff return, but Olympus prevailed 13-1- tie. But Brighton was knocking at the door, having intercepted a Kearns pass at the 42. A pass and a penalty gave the Bengals first down at the Kearns three. For three downs the Cougar defense held, but on the fourth, Ryan Schmidt sneaked the ball across and Brighton took a lead into the locker room. The second half began disastrously for Kearns. The kickoff was fumbled and a Bengal defender picked the ball out of the air and rambled 15 yards to paydirt.
